About Elizabeth Crewes

Elizabeth Crewes (maiden name unknown) deposed that she was born in 1590 in her marriage record to her second husband Sir Thomas Tempest. They were married by license in St Pancreas Church in 1632. Her first marriage record has not been located and is estimated to be about 1610. Her first husband Robert Crewes sr. is thought to have been born in Dulverton and be about the same age or a bit older than Elizabeth. The baptism records for Elizabeth Crewes older children have not been located. Thomas Crewes b. c 1610 and Elizabeth Cradock b. c 1611 were named the oldest son and daughter in the wills of Robert and Elizabeth. In all Elizabeth had 14 children with Robert most (excepting the oldest 4) baptised in the St. Pancreas Church. Her husband Robert Crewes was involved with the East India House in 1610 and his name appears on the lease of a residence made in 1611. This was a diagram of the floor plan for 16a Soper lane which was leased to another man from Christ Church. Mr. Crewes name is on this diagram indicating Robert may have been a neighbor. He later in 1615 is leasing this residence himself and the least stayed in his family thru 1666. Husband Robert died in 1625 and was buried inside St Pancreas Church. At this time Elizabeth Crewes paid the lease herself. On her remarriage in 1632 her second husband Sir Thomas Tempest paid the lease and they sublet it to Elizabeth's unmarried daughter Julian Crewes. Elizabeth and Thomas Tempest moved to Lyncoln's Inn where they resided until she died in 1638. She was returned for burial at St Pancreas Church where she was buried in the same crypt as her first husband. Elizabeth Crewes was the Administrator of her first husbands estate which had underage children as heirs so she made a will herself to make sure that the children of her first husband received what they were due in the will of their father. Her will includes the names of all her living children but at least 2 had died young. She had no children by her second husband but did have a step son child of Thomas Tempest's first wife which she mentions in her will.
