About Elizabeth D. Davis / Mills

Their son George married certainly married an "Elizabeth Lanier" 14 Oct 1794 Effingham GA, born 1 Aug, 1772 NC and died 21 Mar 1836 Jackson Co. MS, the daughter of (Hanna) Ann Mary Lanier. The references below 100% support the claim that Lemuel Lanier Jr and Hannah's (i.e. Ann Mary) daughter Elizabeth Lanier married George W Davis, the son John Henry Davis. It was very probable that one of Lemuel Lanier Sr's brothers had a daughter also named Elizabeth Lanier born about 1734 that married John Henry Davis, but is certainly not the daughter of Lemuel Lanier Jr.

"Ann Mary Unknown was in Effingham County, Georgia before 1784, as she received three grants of land there, the first one dated 1784.In 1793 this Land became Bryan County; Ann Mary Lanier appears frequently in the records, her last record is in June 6, 1806."Ann Mary Lanier, widow of Lemuel Lanier, for love and goodwill and affection for my son in law, George Davis, and Elizabeth his wife, my daughter, and only heir" deeds them her land and possessions." George Davis
            Nancy Davis

Explanation for the two Elizabeth Lanier(s): Elizabeth’s Will mentions her children: Elizabeth, George, Ann (i.e. Nancy), Walter, Joseph while Samuel is not mentioned. Strangely neither her nor her husband's Will mentions James. An Elizabeth Lanier was also the wife of their son George who is listed as a witness signee in the Will of John Henry’s wife Elizabeth (whose maiden name is also Lanier). The Elizabeth that married George W Davis is therefore the niece of the Elizabeth Lanier who married John Davis, therefore George married his cousin.

Two key documents dated 8 Mar 1790 between John Davis and William Osteen, who married John Davis’s daughter Elizabeth Davis 1760 NC and a second document dated 8 Feb 1804 clearly lists Elizabeth Lanier as the wife of George Davis (who resided in Chatham CO. GA), brother Joseph resides in Bryan Co. Ga, and Walter is a witness.
