About Elizabeth (DeVaughn) Owens
Thanks to Bob DeVaughan I have received legal papers containing the will of William DeVaughan, son of the oldest Samuel of which I have records. William was a citizen of Wilcox Co., AL and died in Sept. of 1854. These papers list Williams' siblings and all his sisters married names with their husbands names. They include: Elizabeth DeVaughn Owen(wife of Enoch Owen) and her 4 daughters; John D. (m to Margaret Watson); Mahala( m. to Everett Bailey); Michael was not named as he had left no children; Elijah,(m. to E. B. DeVall); Freeman(m. to Margaret Elizabeth Barker); Samuel (2), (m. to Mary Ann Barker); Mary Corley (R. W. Corley); Susan Rowe; and Cynthia Crumpler.
It also lists the children of those siblings who have died, as follows:
Mary Elizabeth Mangum, infant, sole heir of Eliza, daughter of Isham. And- Isham's children: Elijah M.; Jacob F. ( I think Freeman, nicknamed Mandy); Mary Devaughn Barber(m. to N. R. Barber); Caroline Cockerell( m. to Elam Cockerell); Adeline Kennard (m. to W.J. Kennard); Elizabeth Kennard( m. to John G.Kennard); John P. DeVaughn; and the following deceased siblings of Isham's : Elisha; Wilson; William; and Eliza. I understand it to imply Eliza 's married name was Mangum, infant daughter listed above.
Conclusions are that Hamilton McDuffie Devaughn was the only child of Wilson Devaughn(son of Isham); that John ? Devaughn, William R. Devaughn, Daniel Devaughn are children of William Devaughn, son of Isham. Rebecca was listed as custodian of these minors.
James Smith is listed as guardian of James B. DeVaughn and Elisha F. DeVaughn, sons of Elisha and grandsons of Isham. (I know their mother was Elizabeth Smith.) My grandmother was James B. DeVaughn's daughter.
There are 25 or 26 pages of documents. Some of the spellings vary considerably. Apparently Elijah, son of Isham, had died by 1856, before everything was settled and his widow, Eliza B. Devaughn was administrator of his estate and made Milligan B. her attorney in Henry Co. GA. I think there may be an error in listing of minor heirs of Elijah.
This must have been a huge estate, valued in 5 digits, with his land selling at $6.15 per acre. The estate was settled on July 13, 1857.
I will e- mail these pages as an attached file to anyone who wants them, or I will check for information about anyone, or if you feel I have made an error in typing, etc- I'll check again. Please let me know how I could help anyone at w.wink@sbcglobal.net
Sincerely, Winifred Wink
