About Elizabeth Dowell

A division of the slaves in her estate was made 18 January 1804 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Her son Nehemiah Dowell, Jr. signed the deed as executor on 10 March 1805. She received these slaves by a "Deed of Conveyance mde her by Richard Rixey, Senr., which is duly recorded in the County of Prince William."

Division of Estate of Elizabeth Rixey Dowell, Will book 3, page 497 Agreeable to an order of the Worshipful Court of Fauquier County dated November in the year one thousand eight hundred and three, directed by William Clarkson, Joseph Smith, James Foley, William Gibson, and Richard Rixey, Jr. or any three to divide the slaves of Elizabeth Dowell, deceased among her representatives, agreeable to a deed of conveyance made her by Richard Rixey Sr., dec'd, which is duly recorded in the county of Prince William. We the subscribers according to appointment made by the parties have proceeded to divide the same by first making as fair and equal valuation of the said slaves according to the best judgement we could form. We thus proceed to class the aforesaid slaves in six lots as nearby equal as the aforesaid valuation as the nature of the case ? There being six representatives of the said Elizabeth Dowell, to wit, Pressley Anderson, Samuel Moore and Sally his wife Elisha Dowell, Jesse King and Scythia his wife, James Mallory and Betsy his wife and Nehemiah Dowell, We thus proceed as fairly by ballot to allot the said slaves as follows, to lot number 1 was allotted the following slaves:

  • Charles of the value of one hundred pounds,
  • to lot number two Hannah, Huldaan, and Polly of the value of one hundred and fifteen pounds,
  • to lot number three was allotted Cloe, Maria, and Buress of the value of one hundred and twenty five pounds,
  • to lot number 4 was allotted Hager Alexander a darky of the value of one hundred twenty pounds,
  • to lot number five were allotted Moses and Betty of the value of one hundred and ten pounds
  • and to lot number six were allotted Bess Nancy and ? of the value of one hundred thirty pounds

Lot Number three was drawn by Presley Anderson, Lot Number four was drawn by Samuel Moore and Sally his wife to be held during the life of the said Sally and after her death, to be equally divided among the children of the said Sally and their legal representatives. Lot Number two was drawn by Elisha Dowell, Lot Number One was drawn by Jesse Kink and Scitha (sic) his wife, Lot Number five was drawn by James Mallory & Betsy his wife and Lot Number six was drawn by Nehemiah Dowell.
