Disputed Origins

Elizabeth had been shown as a daughter of Daniel Miller without sources on either profile. Quality sources do not show her last name. Daniel Miller has been detached as her father.

The only potentially credible source that her surname was Miller comes from an U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970,[1] but even that could be based on family lore. This application lists her birth place as Needham Market, which is in Suffolk, not Norfolk, England.

There is no connection to Norfolk. This myth has been perpetuated by a birth record from Norfolk, England showing a Samuel ALDRIDGE and an Elizabeth. However, upon closer inspection, the record is from 1749 in England.[2] It seems that family trees and unsourced marriage records, etc, have added Norfolk to Needham Market. No such place exists, nor did it ever.

Name: All sources used to reference Samuel Eldred's wife refer to her as Elizabeth, with no surname. [3][4]

Marriage: Elizabeth married Samuel Eldred about 1642 in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay.[4]

  • She did not marry Samuel Eldred in England, His father's will, dated 1640, states that his son Samuel was to be given 75 pounds when he turned 18. Since Samuel Eldred was in the colonies by 1641,[5] it easily be can be assumed they married in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Children were:

  1. Elizabeth Eldred-10573,
  2. Samuel Eldred-10574,
  3. Mary Eldred-10576,
  4. Thomas Eldred-10577,
  5. James Eldred-10580,
  6. John Eldred-10581,
  7. Capt. Daniel Eldred-10554.

  • >Elizabeth Miller seems to have sailed to America very soon after the marriage, for Samuel is on record in Boston in 1641, when he joined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Boston. He was actually living in Cambridge at the time, but he later lived at several other places near Boston, among them being Charlestown, Medford and Chelsea, where he plied his trade of shoemaker and farmed rented lands. In 1660 he moved to Wickford, on the western shore of Narrangansett Bay, in Rhode Island. He and his descendants lived in Rhode Island for the next 100 years, and more.
  • Samuel Eldred was a shoemaker by trade and he probably engaged in that occupation for a time after settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the records do not indicate that he did any farming for some time after he came to New England. He probably farmed rented lands until his removal to Rhode Island. He appears a number of times on the court records of Plymouth Colony, usually as defendant with Edward Hutchinson as his attorney. In fact, Samuel Eldred seems to have been very friendly with the Hutchinson family, which may have been an influence inhis decision to move to Rhode Island, which he did in 1668 (date illegible). The Hutchinsons had already gone there after Ann Hutchinson's banishment.
