Disputed Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Akin-82 Alternate Birth Date: 1680. Most family genealogies accept 1674 as Elizabeth's birth year; marking "uncertain" as birth certificates either did not exist there and then or they have been destroyed in subsequent disasters (fire, flood, war).

AIKEN vs. ARCHER Last Name at Birth

John B. FARLEY, Jr., married "Elizabeth," daughter of James AKIN and his wife Sarah [OLIVER] Aiken.

Some genealogical researchers state that the wife of John B. Farley Jr., named Elizabeth, was born to John Archer and Elizabeth (Royall) Archer. Others, a majority, state her parents were James Aiken and Sarah (Randolph) Aiken. In both James and Sarah (Randolph) Aiken's wills, a daughter: Elizabeth "Farlow," is mentioned.[1] Farloe/Farlow is a totally different surname than Farley. Was "Elizabeth Farlow" the same person as "Elizabeth Farley"? It's true that in other local, contemporary documents, a man called Thomas Farlow/Farloe was really Thomas Farley! (For example, “…patented land on the east side of College Creek in Farley's or Farlow’s Neck...”; cited on p. 73 of McCartney’s book. The two spellings are considered synonymous there.)

The "Last name at birth" of Elizabeth Archer or Elizabeth Aiken debate online has strong feelings on both sides. Further, it seems to have only circumstantial supporting evidence on both sides. Thus, we may never know for sure, in the absence of a documented birth or baptism record. There were certainly Archer and Aiken/Akin/Eakin folks nearby, owning land, witnessing wills, etc. in Henrico County, in 17th Century colonial Virginia.[2]

Hi !
A few days ago I posted the information about the Akin Newsletter, and in my haste made the following statement, "... now that we've determined John B. Farley, Jr.'s wife was Elizabeth Akin." From earlier discussions, I had assumed that most were in agreement that the wife of John B. Farley (b. 1670) was probably not Elizabeth Archer, but rather could be Elizabeth Akin. I felt anyone so inclined to delve further into the Akin possibility that the Akin Newsletter could be of assistance. I just checked Cheryl's "Farley Webpage" and see that Elizabeth "Archer" is still listed as wife of John B., Jr., and perhaps we should either change this to "Akin" - or leave her surname blank. I'll copy out for you the earlier correspondence that dealt with the question of Elizabeth Akin vs. Elizabeth Archer...

from Dreama:
I'm going to tackle this one at a time. I think we have found the mystery of Elizabeth Archer/Akin solved. On 21 April 1712 - James Akin,Sr. names his daughter as "Elizabeth Farloe". AND on 2 Feb 1714 - Sarah Akin ,widow of James above , names her daughter as "Elizabeth Farlow". I cannot find any sources other than those I mentioned previously to make Elizabeth an Archer. I think having her named in two wills beats out any second-hand information I have found. And the Archer Society cant find any record of her being the d/o the Royalls. I now think that James and Sarah Akin were her parents. I will type out the wills below and you can see for yourself.

Will of James Akin Sr.dated 21 April,1712, Henrico Co.,VA; Varina Parish.

To wife Sarah , the indian woman Rose and her two children and also the plantation for life and at her death to go to my son James Akin. All the rest to wife Sarah and she to be executrix. Codicil: To my four children: James Akin , Mary Womack, Elizabeth Farloe and Sarah Nunnelly, each 12 p. Witnessed : Thomas Chamberlayne , Richard Oglesby , Charles Roberts. Recorded 1 Feb,1713[3]
Will of Sarah Akin. dated Feb.2,1714; Henrico Co., VA.

Will of Sarah Akin, Widow of James Akin. To son James Akin, slaves and items. To grandson Daniel Nunnelly , a feather bed. To daughter Elizabeth Farlow , a feather bed, To daughter Sarah Nunnelly , items. To son-in-law John Womack 1 shilling. All the rest to be divided into three parts , one third to each children, James , Elizabeth , and Sarah. Son James to be executor. Witnessed: Thomas Chamberlayne , William Baugh ,Charles Roberts. Recorded 2 August 1714.[4]
I do find it interesting that James names his daughter Mary Womack and Sarah names Mary's husband John in her will. Humm. So anyone who has the husband of Mary as Thomas ( like I did) can now change it to John Womack. I hope this makes sense to everyone. - Dreama

An additional letter from Dreama:

I think I am now satisfied that Elizabeth Archer was really Elizabeth Akin d/o James and Sarah Akin. This also solves the puzzle of why we can't connect her to John Archer and Elizabeth Royall. I am also going to keep John Farley and Elizabeth Akin's daughter Mary married to Thomas William Womack based on his will of 1750 in which he names John Farloe as his wifes father. Can anyone find conflicting evidence for this ? I'm open to conjecture.Anything to keep me off the Clays for awhile. - Dreama

From Mike Bartlett:
In William S. Farley's " Vanocaten " (pub. 1993), he has printed an errata page which is included as a supplement to the book (found at the D.A.R. library). One short paragraph reads:

: The wife of John Farley, Jr., b.c. 1670, was probably Elizabeth Aikens, dau. of James and Sarah Aikens, Sr. of Henrico VA. (Letter from Ms. Mary Elizabeth Ferrell 7/1994)

From Wayne Langston:

"James Eakin, Sr. and James Akin, Jr. to John Farley, Jr. 80 acres in
Varina Parish, bounded by Robert Russell, Flintons, Butterworth bottom and Cobs slash. Wit: John Farley, Sr., Nicholas Dison. Signed James Eakin, Sr., James Eakin, Jr. 20 Aug 1696. "[5]

We are getting closer to demonstrating that the Elizabeth who married John Farley, b. 1674, was the daughter of James AIKEN and Sarah [Oliver] AIKEN. With John Farley, Jr. and Sr. on the same will with them, it seems to clinch a possible connection.[6]

Elizabeth was the daughter of James Akin & Sarah Oliver, named as “daughter Elizabeth Farley” in her Will. Not the daughter of John Archer b 1644.
