About Elizabeth Grey

William's oldest son John George, perhaps unhappy with managing a wood yard, and learning of the New Zealand Land Company's offer, emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 25. He travelled on the Bernica, 548 tons; which sailed from London on 7 July 1848, for New Plymouth, arriving on 3 November 1848, at Nelson on 5th, and Wellington and Port Chalmers, where she arrived on 12 December 1848. In 1849 William and Elizabeth with the rest of the family followed him on a boat called the Larkins which sailed from London on 6 June, docking on 11 September at Port Chalmers, Dunedin. The passenger list has: Grey, William (65) Elizabeth née Archbold, wife (45) William (24) George (22 Edward Henry (18) James (16) Charles (14) Mary (10) Eliza Patience (10). Elizabeth says in a letter that: " we never regretted leaving England and the dependant situation we were placed in". This may refer to the fact that William and his two eldest sons had been employed by his nephew George Carr. The Greys were early settlers in Otago, arriving at a wild and almost uninhabited place. It had been surveyed in 1846 and advertised with glowing reports by the New Zealand Land Company. Dr. Burns, a promoter of the settlement "spent two years travelling through Scotland, canvassing among his friends and acquaintances, and succeeded in inducing many of them to become purchasers" of land. The Company offered each purchaser three separate land orders, a quarter-acre town section, 10 acres of suburban land, and 50 acres of rural land, selected by a ballot. Life was very hard for the pioneers who began by building their own houses often made of wattle and daub.

I have a copy of the marriage bond for Elizabeth and William's marriage. It mentions her mother Elizabeth but the bond of £200 was paid by William Grey and George Archbold of New Heaton, in the parish of Cornhill in the county of Durham, farmer.

I had assumed that George would be Elizabeth's father but of course this may not be so. It would tie in with the first entry from John Heckels and because the mothers name is Elizabeth Archbold when she makes her mark on the marriage bond it could be assumed that Elizabeth Turnbull later married George Archbold.

William and Elizabeth appear in a family tree in the history of Northumberland under Grey of Milfield. The first tree is amended in the appendix which is the final volume. (Unfortunately I didn't note the volume number, being short of time and excited by my find but I think it is Vol 13).
