About Elizabeth M Halbert

In 1995 Elizabeth is the oldest living descendant of John Veazey.

As of 1997, the most senior living descendant of John Veazey is his great-great-great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Logan Halvert, who was born November 10, 1887. Alert and mobile with the help of a walker, Elizabeth appears to have perfected the Veazey gene. She was born before the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. She had close relatives who experienced the War Between the States from both sides and could give her first-hand insights into that conflict. Life on the farm had changed very little to the generations before her birth but the century during which she has lived has been one of rapid industrialization. Elizabeth has kept pace, but never ceases to marvel at the modern conveniences and modes of travel, all so different from her childhood.

On the even of her 100th birthday in 19987, the church bells in Muncie rang 10 times, one for each decade of her life, and 100 balloons were released from the churchyard after a reception in her honor. She said at that time that she was halfway to paradise. Also, she was amazed that she had lived for such a long time.

Elizabeth is still living in the home in Muncie, IN, where her daughter Miriam was born in 1924. Her philosophy as stated in 1990, "Don't give up, don't give in , or you'll give out! We have to fight our fears with fortitude. It's so easy to fear, fear, fear. There are so many things we can fear but we have to fight it. I dread the time when I can't see at all. I don't like losing my sight but I'd rather lose that than my brain, because then I couldn't tell people I love them. But I have to be thankful. My parents didn't live to see seventy....The real poverty of life is to be forgotten, uncared for and unwanted. I have none of this so I am rich." her goal has never been to live long but to live well, to fill each day rather than to watch time pass.

Elizabeth is known in her community for her good cheer, positive attitude, and as the inspiration to her friends and neighbors. She never says anything negative about others, but always something good about everything and everyone. "Getting old isn't so bad if you keep your marbles polished."
