William and Elizabeth lived in Dorsetshire. Their son Richard, our direct ancestor, was baptized on 9 Jun 1588 in Marshwood, Dorsetshire.

During the later 16th century, the name 'Phippen' was almost uniquely confined to Dorset and Somerset. Authentic spellings in printed Tudor lay subsidy rolls, etc. are: Fippen, Fippin, Phepen, Pheppyn, Phepyn, Phippen, Phippin, Phippinge.
Richard Hallett had two brothers, William and Robert, and one sister, Christian. They were the children of William Hallett and Elizabeth Phippen, whose marriage was recorded at Whitchurch Cononicorum in 1578.
