Robert Phippen

Fitzpen was also known as Fippen, and later the family would use Phippen.

Son of JOHN FITZ PEN of Weymouth in Dorset, he married CECILIE, daughter of THOMAS JORDAN of Dorset, on Sept. 18, 1580. He was only 34 when he died leaving a widow and four children:

The original name was Fitzpen or FitzPayn. In the 12th century, the baronial family of FitzPayn held the manor of Oaksey, Wilts, and held lands in Dorsetshire. When Rev. George Fitzpen, brother of David Phippen of New England, entered his pedigree and arms in the Visitation of Cornwall, 1620, the pedigree was headed "Fitzpen al's(alias) Phipen, " and the same form was used in his will in 1650. Even in 1677, one of David's sons is listed in a Boston deed as Joseph "Phippen al's Fitzpen." Various spellings appear in records including Phippeny.

The pedigree begins with Henry Fitzpen of St.Mary Overy, Devon, who md. Alice Peirce. They had 3 sons: Robt, John and George. Their son John was father of Robt Fitzpen als Fippen of Weymouth, co. Dorset, who md 18 Sept 1580, Cecily, dau of Thomas Jordan of co. Dorset. Robert and Ciceley had 4 children: 1. Owen b. 1582 d. near Truro, Cornwall. 17 March 1636. ae 54 captured by Turks.... 2. David 3. George, master of a grammar school in Truro, Cornwall and Puritan rector of St. Mary's Church there but was evicted for his Puritan stance. Died without issue, leaving land to David's 4 sons in new England. 4. Cecily, bapt at Melcomb 10 March 1563. md a Reynolds (Reignolds)
