Disputed Origins

The surname "Cason" given to Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Hammond, is based on unproven information.

As early as 1855, Henry Bond's History of Watertown,[1] stated in Volume One that Thomas Hammond was the brother of William Hammond, who was son of Thomas and Rose (Tripp) Hammond. This was based on a baptism for a son, Thomas, 9 Jan 1586, in Lavenham, England.[2] However Thomas, son of Thomas was buried in the same parish a few days later, 16 Jan 1586. Bond must have figured this out for in Volume Two of the History, he updates saying that "There is no evidence that he and William Hammond, of Watertown, were kinsmen; but it is very probable." He also says, "It is supposed that he came from Lavenham, Co. Suffok, England, whence it is known that William Hammond, of Wat., came; and that he was the Thomas Hammond who m., in Lavenham, Nov. 12, 1623, Elizabeth Cason."[3]

In 1904, another theory was developed by Frederick Stam Hammond. He located a baptism in nearby Melford Parish. Thomas and John, sons of William Hammond bpt 2 Sep 1603. There is a third, also in Melford, Thomas son of Nicholas 28 Nov 1605. F. S. Hammond attributes the marriage to Elizabeth Cason to the son of William.[4] Once again there is no proof provided, just supposition based on the similarity of names.

A marriage between Elizabeth Cason, daughter of Robert Cason and Prudence ()Hammond Cason, and Thomas Hammond took place. But where is the proof that this Thomas, was the immigrant? There are no records in New England that point to Lavenham or vicinity as the location of his previous life. There are several Thomases in the area and probably other Thomas Hammonds to choose from.[5]

These suppositions have of course been repeated by subsequent genealogists and historians.[6]

Given the lack of proof, the conclusion is that the surname of Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Hammond, the immigrant, is unknown.

Elizabeth was born in Great Whelnetham England, a few miles north of Lavenham, before 1604.

She was the granddaughter of Robert and Elizabeth (

) Hammond, of Great Whelnetham. According to his Will dated Nov. 15, 1604, recorded at Bury St. Edmonds, (Coppinger, Folio 387) he gave Elizabeth his grand-daughter one cow. He also mentions other children and legacies in his will.
