Elizabeth Hay was the illegitimate daughter of John 4th Lord Hay of Yester (some references say 3rd Lord but this is incorrect). In her Letters of Legitimation she is described as the "bastard daughter of John Hay, Lord of Yester."

On 26th February 1564-65, at Edinburgh, a charter of Precept of Robert Lawder of The Bass confirmed to his spouse Elizabeth Hay, of the lands of Craig, Balgone, Fennyfurris and the "Bowhous" [today: Bowerhouse, near Dunbar] with land, fortalice, manor etc etc., in Haddingtonshire, for her life.[1]

Elizabeth Hay, wife of Robert Lauder of the Bass is mentioned in a renunciation of certain lands in the North Berwick Protocol Book on 1st April 1565.[2]

in the archives is an Inventory of 'plenishing' pertaining to deceased William, Lord Hay of Yester, made by Elizabeth Hay, Lady Bass, 9 January 1579/80. Recorded 29-30 Aug 1586.[3]

It is clear that she was still alive on 27th September, 1580, when "Elizabeth Hay, relict of Robert Lawder of Bass" received "the ward and nonentry of the lands and barony of Swinton for terms from the decease of John Swinton of that Ilk until the entry of the heir; with the relief of the same and the marriage of Robert Swinton, son and heir of the said John, or of other heir succeeding. (Composition: £2000). Signed at Holyroodhouse".[4]

Elizabeth Hay, Lady Bass, appeared before the Privy Council several times with David Preston of Craigmillar chasing her late husband's Royal debtors

In the Testament dative of Sir Robert Lauder of Bass (d.1576) proved 3rd March 1581 it is indicated by the division of the remaining estate that Elizabeth was by then dead.
