About John Hay, 4th Lord Hay of Yester

Biography

Extracted from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hay-17

John Hay was born the son and heir of John Hay, third Lord Hay of Yester, and his first wife, Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of George, Master of Angus, and sister to Archibald (Douglas), sixth Earl of Angus.[1] He was born c. 1510.

He is generally said to have died in 1557, but this is a mistake. He was elected Provost of Peebles, and presided at the Council meeting 30 September 1555, and died shortly afterwards, and certainly before 30 January 1556, when he is referred to as "umquhile Johne, Lord Hay of Yester".[5]

Family

He married, probably shortly before 18 October 1533, Margaret Livingston, daughter of William (Livingston), fourth Lord Livingston of Callander, who survived him, and was living 11 February 1567. They had children:

  1. William Hay. Likely born c. 1535, he will succeed.
  2. male, unknown, Hay. He was living 28 March 1573, when, as brother of Lord Hay of Yester, he is mentioned as a possible hostage.
  3. Thomas Hay, provided to the ministry of the Cross Kirk of Peebles 30 October 1566; this he resigned in favour of his nephew, afterwards the seventh Lord, 15 January 1584, and he died before 11 June 1584.
  4. Margaret Hay, married, contract 11 February 1567, to Sir Robert Lauder of Poppill. She survived him, and died before 20 February 1584, when her testament was confirmed at Edinburgh. Douglas confuses her with Margaret, daughter of the fifth Lord, who married the seventh Lord Borthwick.
  5. Christian Hay, married to Henry Lauder.

He also had a daughter, mother's name unknown, Elisabeth Hay, legitimated under the Great Seal 18 August 1558.

4th Lord Hay of Yester. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Pinkie, 10-Sept-1547 and sent to the Tower of London, where he remained until peace was concluded. Provost Peebles 1555. Married Margaret just prior to 18 Oct 1533. Dies by 30 Jan 1555/6
