About Elizabeth Irish

She is buried on her old farm directly across the street from the old Friend Meeting House. Her grave stone reads:

"Here lies the body of Elizabeth, wife of John Irish, who dyed March the 8th., 1707 in the 53rd year of her age."

From: W. L. Irish Buried in Lot #16 on the old IRISH farm, across the road from the old Friend's Meeting House at Little Compton, Rhode Island.

From: Paul Randall She is given as "Elizabeth Savory" in W. Irish's book (1964), who credits B. F. Wilbur as a source. Wilbur in 1967 gave her as "Elizabeth Thurston" (see Little Compton Families by Wilbur). Since there was a Thurston family nearby with a daughter of the right name and age, I have recorded her as "Thurston" for now (see R. Bowerman, Second Boat Query Magazine May/June 1991).

From: Marva Rydlach - matya@@rydalch.org http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dcsvdata "The Family of John and Elizabeth (Irish) Richmond", by Robert H. Bowerman, says Torrey's "New England Marriages..." gives no surname for her but she is given as Thurston(?) in "Little Compton Families", by B. F. Wilbour, and as Savory in "Descendants of John Irish" by W. L. Irish. But he says Irish gave Mr. Wilbur as the source of the Savory name, that Wilbur died in 1964 and the editor who prepared Little Compton Families for revision in 1974 has no information as to which name was given first. He says further that the Thurston family lived nearby but the nearest Savory family was at Plymouth, some distance away, and with no suitable daughters. The article shows that if she was Thurston her parents were Edward Thurston and Elizabeth Mott and that her mother was daughter of Adam, son of John. It has nothing further on the Savory name. Her death is given in Little Compton Cemetery records and says "in 53rd year". This would make her birth 1653 or 1654. Elizabeth Thurston was shown in the Ancestral File and on the FGRA sheet born 1650. In the will of John Richmond he names a daugher Elizabeth, and her son Thurston. Also, the will was witnessed by Ebenezer Mott among others. The Ancestral File has one family group with her as wife, with no surname. Another family has her name Elizabeth Thurston. There is an entry in the 1993 IGI for Mrs. Elizabeth Irish, born 1654, Little Compton, no parents, Relative: Rosel J. Hyde. The only entry in the 1993 IGI of Elizabeth Thurston, born 1650, Newport, Npt, R.I., daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mott) indicates she died as a child. There are five entries in the 1994 IGI, born Feb 1650, one without parents, the other four, daughters of Edward Thurston and Elizabeth Mott, three of them born at Newport,Newport, R.I . Wife of John Irish - Daughter of Edward And Elizabeth (Mott) Thurston
