After her death, Elizabeth's father was appointed guardian for the children. Effie Blanch Lauderdale was about 7-8 years of age. As reported by Barbara Neal Ledbetter in her book "Indaian Raids":
"It was Asa Henson's sister, Elizabeth Henson Lauderdale, who was presently a widow with a large family of children to support because warriors among Chief Santana's tribe had murdered her husband three years prior: James S. Lauderdale was murdered and scalped on November 22, 1867, as he traveled between his log cabin home and that of his neighbor John W. Brummett, about two miles from Carroll's Creek. Lauderdale was returning a borrowed wagon and team to Brummett when the scalping took place. At this very moment, the Lauderdale children were being cared for by Asa, and by Asa's aged mother and father; one Lauderdale daughter, Amira, had been adopted by a nearby family."
