About Elizabeth (Lizzy) Johanna Margaret Brocker
Known as Lizzy Schuller she arrived in Cape Town at the age of 16 (1886) and worked as a children's nurse to a wealthy family. She met and married in Cape Town.
Before she married she was raped and a child, William Edward Brocker, was born. and sent back to Riversdale to be brought up. He was known as Willy and was classified as coloured on his death certificate. He married Tilly and had no children.
Betty Miller remembers Lizzy's brother 'Uncle Joe' (Schuller) playing the pianola at their house in Park Road, Woodstock. Joe's wife was also called Lizzy 'Auntie Lizzy' and they had 3 children: Joe (who died at 15), Beatrice (Beaty) and Winifred (Wini). Aunty Lizzy is reported as being killed by a tyre.
In 1953 there were two ladies staying in her house at 63 Roberts Rd. They were Rachel Tennant and Kathleen Hansen (one staying in a room, the other in a garage). The Health Inspector/Building Inspector ejected them on the 8/7/1953.
There is a letter from Violet (Witten?) dated 1/5/53 saying that her mother was 85yrs old etc.....
Elizabeth and John were married by the Rev. W.L. Clementson in St. Mark's Chuch Woodstock.
