Elizabeth Long

Eliza's official death record says she was 86 years old at the time of her passing. I have edited the year of her birth to 'circa 1795'.

A newspaper article that has been passed down through our family talks about the annual reunion of John Long's family. In it, it clearly states his second wife was his cousin, Miss Elizabeth Long. I have yet to see any concrete proof that her maiden name was Hiefel, nor are there any Hiefels in the Long family tree. And I have proof it was not - this website clearly states that John's wife was Elizabeth Switzer, : https://www.geocities.ws/keepsakebook/legear.html

I have since found the documents for John Long's crown land grant. It states he arrived in Ontario with his wife and children. It seems the article about the Longs was mistaken. Unfortunately, the land grant does not state his wife's name, nor does the Legear website give the name of any other wives he might have had.

The census record is mistaken. Joseph Long and Leticia Switzer were recently married, and as yet, had no children. If the 12 year old boy listed in the census were Leticia's son, she herself would have been 12 years old at the time of his birth, as the census gives her age as 24 years! Joseph and Leticia were living with Joe's parents. His father was 86, and died shortly after the census was taken. When his mother, Eliza, died, it was Joseph who made the official report to the coroner, indicating that she was likely still living with him.

I have now found information on the WikiTree site that says the 12 year old boy listed in the census was the son of John's son, Richard Long, and his wife, Catherine. Richard died in 1851, and the boy then went to live with his grandparents and aunt and uncle, Joseph and Leticia.
