About Elizabeth Margaret Mackay, co-heiress of Bighouse

VI. Elizabeth, m. in 1728 Lieut.-Col. the Hon. Hugh Mackay, son of the 3rd Lord Reay, and d. 31st March, 1769, having borne five children. Her husband had sasine of Strathhalladale on 5th October, 1744, having bought up the encumbrances upon the estate. He m., secondly, Isabella, dau. of Alexander Mackenzie of Lentran, 14th April, 1770, and d. at Bath without issue by his second marriage on 12th November of that year. The issue of the first marriage was : —
i. Ensign Hugh Mackay, d. unmarried in early life.

ii. Colin, d. in infancy.

iii, Janet, m. Colin Campbell of Glenure, who was murdered by one of the Stewarts of Ardshiel in 1752. Her issue was three daus. :

  • 1. Elizabeth Campbell, d. young.
  • 2. Louisa Campbell, inherited \ of the estate of Bighouse,and m. George Mackay of Handa, who purchased the remainder of the estate, and was afterwards known as of Bighouse. She had issue (See Sandwood Mackays).
  • 3. Colina Campbell, m. James Bailie, merchant in Bristol and Granada, and M.P. for Horsham

iv. Mary, m. William Bailie of Kosehall, and d. his widow at Peterhead in 1808. They had issue seven sons and two daus. : —Mackay Hugh Bailie, Colonel of the Reay Fencibles, and afterwards Major-General ; George ; John ; Simon ; Charles ; Lamington ; Evan, afterwards Sir Evan, a Major-General of the Bengal Army ; Elizabeth, m. Roderick Mackenzie of Fairburn and Catherine, m. Captain James Sutherland of Oldany.

v. Marion, m. the 5th Lord Reay as his first wife, and d. without issue.

Her mother was Catherine, daughter of William Ross of Little Kindeace, Ross-shire).

Wm Ross was murdered during an argument over the price of a horse in 1688.

Elizabeth's maternal grandmother, Jane Dunbar, daughter of Patrick Dunbar of Sydera (Cyderhall, nr. Dornoch) married firstly, William Ross, and secondly,Capt. Hugh Mackay of the Scourie family. She inherited from her father (see sasine 18.6.1719, page 293, The Book of Mackay). 

Their eldest surviving son, Capt. Patrick Mackay continued. However, he sold up in 1832 when, together with a large number of Mackey families from Edderachilis (north-west Sutherland) he left for the new settlement of Georgia.

2. Col Hon Hugh Mackay of Bighouse (d. 12 Nov 1770), mar. (1) aft. 15 Jul 1728 Margaret Mackay, coheiress of Bighouse (d. 26 Mar 1769), and had issue by his first marriage:

  • 1a. Ensign Hugh Mackay (dvp. 1751)
  • 2a. Colin Mackay (dvp. a child)
  • 1a. Janet Mackay, mar. Colin Campbell of Glenure (d. 1752), and had issue
  • 2a. Mary Mackay (d. 21 Sep 1808), mar. William Baillie of Rosehall, and had issue
  • 3a. Robina Mackay (d. 10 Aug 1762)
  • 4a. Marion Mackay (dsps. 12 Mar 1759), mar. 6 Jan 1758 as his first wife her half-cousin George [Mackay], 5th Lord Reay

The honourable Colonel Hugh Mackay of Bighouse had, by his wife Elizabeth, a son

  • Captain Hugh, who died uumarried; and three daughters,
  • 1st, Janet, who married Colin Campbell of Glenlire ;
  • 2nd Mary, married to William Baillie of Rosshall ; and
  • 3d, Marian, married to her cousin-german, George, fifth Lord Reay

By some family arrangements, the estate became the property of Louisa and her husband

2. Hugh of Bighouse, a major in the Earl of Sutherland's Regiment 1759 ; married, first (contract 15 July 1728), Margaret Mackay, coheiress of Bighouse, and by her, who died at Bighouse 26 March 1769, had

  • (1) Hugh, an ensign in the Earl of Sutherland's regiment, died in 1751,^2 unmarried.
  • (2) Colin, died a child.
  • (3) Janet, married to Colin Campbell of Glenure, murdered in1752, with issue.
  • (4) Mary, married to William Bailie of Rosehall, with issuedied at Peterhead 21 September 1808.
  • (5) Robina, died at Harrogate 10 August 1762, unmarried
He married, secondly, 14 April 1770, Isabella, daughter of Alexander Mackenzie of Lentran, died at Bath 12 November 1770, without issue by his second marriage.
