About Elizabeth Mather
Elizabeth Atherton aka "Catherine"
- Birth: 28 SEP 1628 in Winwick, Lancashire, England
- Death: 15 MAY 1678 in Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts
- Parents: Humphrey Atherton & Mary Wales
Her name is seen in older genealogies as Catherine, but probate records name her "Elizabeth."
Elizabeth married Timothy Mather (son of Richard) as his first wife.
Children of Elizabeth (ATHERTON) and Timothy MATHER:
- Rev. Samuel MATHER of Windsor married Hannah TREAT;
- Nathaniel died as infant;
- Richard married Catharine WISE;
- Catharine;
- Nathaniel;
- Joseph married Sarah CLAP; and
- Atherton married first Rebecca STOUGHTON, and second Mary LAMB.
After her death, Timothy married 2nd to Elizabeth, widow of William Weeks.
Notes
The book, Pioneers of Massachusetts, does not connect this woman to William Weeks. A sister, Mary, is mentioned as the wife of Joseph Weeks, a brother of William.
Comments from the George Weeks of Dorchester Book: "She may have been the daughter of Humphrey Atherton. Savage, in General Dictionary of New England, says that Atherton had a daughter "Catherine, sometimes called Elizabeth," who married Timothy Mather in 1650. Now as Elizabeth, widow of William Weekes, married Timothy Mather in 1678-79, Mr. Savage may have supposed that he had married but one daughter of Atherton, and that she was known by both names; while the truth was, that if Elizabeth was a daughter of Atherton, he had married the two sisters in succession."
All of the above indicates it is possible Elizabeth was the daughter of Humphrey Atherton, but it is far from certain.
The note on her death date says she was 79 years old.
