  • Birth: 1718, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Virginia, USA
  • Death: 1798, Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA

"Mrs. William ("President") Nelson, who was Elizabeth Burwell, only daughter of Nathaniel Burwell (1680-1721) of "Carter's Creek," Gloucester Co., Va., and his wife Elizbeth Carter (c. 1690-liv.1732), who was the eldest daughter of "King" Carter (1663-1732) of "Corotoman, " and Judith Armistead (16 -1699), his first wife. Her father died when she was a child and her mother married, c. 1723, Dr. George Nicholas. The supervision of her education fell to her aunt, Mrs. Mann Page, of "Rosewell," who was Judith Carter, third child of Robert and Judith Armistead Carter."

"She married President William Nelson probably in March, 1738 (Feb 2, 1737/38). Her first and most illustrious son was born the day after Christmas of the same year and became one of the most famous of all Virginians. He was Thomas Nelson, Governor of Virginia, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a Major General of the Revolutionary Army."

"According to Bishop Meade (Old Churches, etc.), President and Elizabeth Burwell Nelson had many sons and many daughters, but none of the latter lived beyond the age of twelve years. One of their sons was burned to death. These and other misfortunes made Mrs. Nelson "a woman of sorrowful spirit." The same authority asserts: "She was a truly pious and conscientious woman. Her private and public exercises of religion, her well-known frequent prayers for her children and pious instruction of them, and exemplary conduct in all things, established this beyond all contradiction.""

"The father of Mrs. Nelson was the grandfather of Col. Nathaniel Burwell (1750-1814), who built "Carter Hall" in Clarke Co., Virginia. Her son, Col. Hugh Nelson, of Yorktown, at one time owned much land in what is now Clarke County, and offered o give the land on which the Old Chapel now stands to the Church. The same two acres he offered was later given the Church by Col. Burwell. A number of her grandchildren have lived and died in Clarke County among them being Philip Nelson, "The Patriarch," who owned "Long Branch" and "Roseney," and Betsey Nelson who married Nathaniel Burwell of Saratoga and lived and died there. Both of thees rest in the Old Chapel grave yard." (Ref: Clarke County Historical Association website)
