About Elizabeth Perkins

Disputed Origins

Sylvester Eveleth and his wife Susan Nubery cannot be the parents of Elizabeth, wife of John Perkins (Perkins-631). Sylvester was born in 1604, married in 1630, and died in 1689. Elizabeth was born in 1616, married in 1635 and died in 1684. Charles Robert Anderson, in Great Migration Begins (1995), does not identify a maiden name for her. For this reason, no parents are shown for Elizabeth. PLEASE DO NOT ADD THEM.

Biography

Elizabeth Unknown was born about 1616 in England. She and John Perkins were married by 1636, as that is the birth year of their first child.[1][2][3][4] The marriage could have taken place in Ipswich, Essex County, where John's father lived after he came to Massachusetts, or about 1635,[5] perhaps in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.[6]

John and Elizabeth Perkins had the following children, all born at Ipswich:[2][3][4]

John, b.c. 1636, d. bef. Mar 1659, m. Lidia ___ 1658; Abraham, b.c. 1640, d. 27 Apr 1722, m. Hannah Beamsley; Jacob, b.c. 1646, d. 26 Nov 1719, m1. Sarah Wainwright 1667, m2. Sarah Kinsman 1688/9; Luke, b.c. 1649, d. aft. 1695, m1. Elizabeth Jaques 1677, m2. Sarah (____); Isaac, b.c. 1650, d.1726, m. Hannah Knight 1669; Nathaniel, b.c. 1652, d. aft. Jun 1703, m. Judith (____) 1684; Samuel, b.c. 1655, d. bef. Nov 1700, m. Hannah West; Thomas, unable to care for himself and left to the care of his brother Luke by their father; Sarah, living Apr 1683, no further record. Elizabeth died 27 Sep 1684[5] in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts,[2][3][4] her death recorded as: "Elisabeth, w. Lt. John, Sept. 27, 1684."[7]

So here is what we know about Quartermaster John Perkins:

  • 1. He was christened in 1609 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire. A transcribed record for this christening is attached below under Sources.
  • 2. He was married after he arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and although there is no record of their marriage, given the ages of their children, they likely married about 1635. John was living in Ipswich at the time, so the marriage may have taken place there.
  • 3. He and his wife Elizabeth had a large family of mostly sons. Unfortunately, records of their births or christenings did not survive, and this John left no will.
  • 4. Elizabeth died in 1684 and John died in 1686. Both deaths were recorded in Ipswich vital records. Neither John nor Elizabeth have a surviving headstone.

His known children:

  • 1. John - born about 1635. We actually don't have a good birth year estimate for John, and aren't even sure that he was the oldest child. His only child was born about the time of his death in 1659. 1659 was the earliest date that any of his siblings had any children. This reason, plus the fact that he was named after his father, may indicate that he was the oldest. His wife's name was Lydia. In the above-mentioned book (The Family of John Perkins...) this John was mentioned on pages 21-22, among which was the following: "The Record of the March term of the Court for 1659: 'John Perkins, Junior, dying intestate, this Court grants administration to Lidua Perkins, widow...there being..one child new born...then pay to her sayd child [fourteen pounds] or at the day of her marriage with her mother's consent..."
  • 2. Abraham - born 1640. This is a good estimate for a birth year. In Ipswich vital records, it indicates that Abraham died in 1722 at age 82. Abraham outlived almost all the other siblings and had a large family with his wife Hannah Beamsley (see pages 22 - 24).
  • 3. Jacob - born 1646. This is also a good estimate for a birth year. In a deposition he gave in 1695, he testified that he was then 49 years old. He had two wives, both named Sarah, and 15 children (see pages 22 - 24).
  • 4. Luke - born 1649. In a deposition he gave in 1695, he testified that he was then 46 years old. He may have been somewhat the blacksheep of the family. He was involved in a few lawsuits with his father, which he lost. He apparently had two wives - Elizabeth Jaquith who died about 1690, and Sarah. It is not known of any children he had with his first wife, and only two with his second wife. See pages 26 - 27.
  • 5. Isaac - born 1650ish. This birth date is estimated. Since he was married in 1669, he may have been born before 1650. He married Hannah Knight, had a large family, and left behind a will. See pages 27 - 28.
  • 6. Nathaniel - born 1652ish. Married Judith. Only two known children. Was alive in 1703. See page 29.
  • 7. Samuel - born 1655ish. Married Hannah West. Four known children. Died intestate in 1700. Still had two minor children. See pages 29 - 30.
  • 8. Thomas - It is not known when he was born or when he died. He was put in his brother Luke's care; it appears that he was unable to care for himself. See page 30.
  • 9. Sarah - In a lawsuit from 1683, a woman named Sarah Perkins referred to her "father, Quartermaster John Perkins." However, it is possible that she was John's daughter-in-law, and not daughter, as one of his sons had at the time a wife named Sarah.
