Edward Petway's wife was the widow of William Carter, Jr. (1625?-1655), whose stepmother, Alice Croxon Carter Alice Warren, in Aug 1655, granted Edward 500 acres in Southwark Parish, Surry County, to be used by Edward only during the lifetime of his wife Elizabeth.

Edward's wife Elizabeth outlived him and her son-in-law Samuel Judkins Jr. (1657-1705) Samuel Judkins, of Surry County , and was listed in Surry County with 650 acres of land, of which at least 200 acres were previously owned by members of the Judkins family.

Alice Carter, widdow, acknowledges that Edward Pettaway married the Relict of William Cater, son-in-law of Mrs. Alice Carter, that that 500 acres of land bequeathed to the sd William Carter, Jr., by his father, husband of Alice Carter, and that Edward Pettaway for the life of Eliza Carter, Relict of William Carter, Jr., have her plantation, 145 acres, but what is leased to Thos. Culmer and Mathew Hobson. Wit: Nich. Perry, Rich. Blunt
