Elizabeth Goldsmith ( or Goldsmid) Phillips born 1832.
Left home Jan 20, 1845 at 13 yrs.
Married Patrick Howard 14/1/1846 at the age of 14.
Travelled from Grahamstown, mostly on foot, about 600 + miles with a wagon train, to Pietermaritzburg. 'Lost' Patrick along the way, and met up with Valentine, having 4 kids, before getting married. She was 17 when having 1st child, John. Possibly got that long to get a divorce or annulment from Patrick?
Barry's mum, always refered to her as Grandma Hyam (3rd marriage to George Chappell Hyam in 1900) When you put it into the historical times, the unrest of the Xhosa etc..she was a brave lady. maybe Patrick died on the march 9 but then she would have been able to marry straight away...so..

NOTICE Absconded from her parents, Elizabeth PHILLIPS, a minor. As it is believed it is her intention to get married to a person of the name of Patrick HOWARD, a discharged soldier of the 27th Regiment, and which was attempted in Graham's Town but failed, this is to notify to clergymen of all denominations not to publish the banns; and further, any person or persons harbouring the said Elizabeth PHILLIPS, a minor, will be prosecuted according to law.
