About Elizabeth Sherwood

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=53799678

Elizabeth Rice was a daughter of Ralph Howard Rice (1676-1729) and his wife Catherine Sherwood. Her maternal grandfather was Hugh Sherwood (c.1632-1710/110 who came to Maryland from England in the 1660s.

On 8 Feb. 1745, Elizabeth married her cousin, Daniel Sherwood, Jr. (1709-1767, son of Daniel Sherwood & Mary Hopkins) of St. Michael's Parish, Talbot County, Maryland. He was an officer in the Maryland militia in the 1740s, and had Oxford and Auctill (Anctill?) Plantations, as well as Sherwood Manor. They had three children, Daniel Sherwood III (1749-1838, m. Frances Linthicum, 2nd m. Rachel Layton, went to North Carolina), Hugh Sherwood(1751-1829, m. Rebecca Hasty, went to Tennessee) and Mary Sherwood (1753-?, m. Richard Linthicum, a cousin of Daniel's wife, also went to North Carolina).

Elizabeth accompanied her son Daniel Sherwood III (1749-1838) and his family to Guilford County, North Carolina. From a letter written by Elizabeth's grandson, Benjamin Sherwood, "I recollect seeing grandmother Sherwood; she died at an advanced age, when I was maybe 6 or 8 years old--cause of death, cancer in the mouth (under the tongue.) She was not beloved by us boys, we thought she was peevish and unreasonably hard to satisfy; I have been told by a distant relative, Daniel Orrell, since I have been grown, that grandmother, before she became a child from age, was one of the most mild and lovely women on earth."

Elizabeth, like her son and daughter in law, was a member of the Pleasant Garden Methodist Church. Doubtless, she is buried here.
