About Elizabeth Smith

  • findagrave.... ;
  • Elizabeth (Livingston) Smith was the eldest of nine children of James and Elizabeth (Simpson) Livingston. She was born in Montreal where her father was involved in trade with the rest of the Livingston family in Albany. At the outbreak of the Revolution the family returned to Saratoga County, New York, where her father and two uncles joined the invading army of General Richard Montgomery, their kinsman by marriage. She married, on February 5, 1792, Peter Smith. They had six children of whom the most important was Gerrit Smith. She died in 1818 at their "homestead" in Peterboro, in Smithfield township, Madison County, New York, a place that carried the family names and was the center of their large landholdings and numerous business ventures
