About Elizabeth Spencer

Elizabeth Deaton’s story begins in Virginia with the arrival of America's first southern Deaton. A certain William Deaton departed England aboard the good ship "Assurance" in 1639/40 and landed in what is now Northampton Co., VA, 1-1-1640/41. Some family tales say that he arrived on New Year Day. Records indicate he arrived owing for his passage. One George Truitt paid for him and three others. Family tales also say he arrived with one book, "The Holy Bible", two friends, and three shillings. Perhaps a third Deaton (also William Deaton) is recorded in Northampton, Co., VA,7-24-1656. Again, a certain Thomas Deaton Sr., born in England, entered the area of New Kent and Essex in Virginia.

JOHN D. DEATON was born 1766 in Wake County, North Carolina, and died 1848 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. He married ISABELLA (WATTS/NEACE) BRANTLEY 1786 in Chatam Lancaster County, South Carolina. She was born 1769, and died Bet. 1797 - 1863 in Wolf Coal, Breathitt County, Kentucky. Chatham County, North Carolina. Children of JOHN DEATON and ISABELLA BRANTLEY are: BRANTLEY DEATON, b. 1788, North Carolina; d. Bet. 1832 - 1880. LEWIS THOMAS DEATON, b. December 26, 1791, North Carolina; d. January 04, 1851, Avon, Polk County, Iowa. ELIZABETH DEATON, (a name passed from generation to generation) b. 1793, North Carolina; d. March 03, 1874, Wolfe County, Kentucky. WILLIAM DEATON, b. 1795, Lee County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1835, Hendricks County, Indiana. SAMUEL DEATON, b. 1796, Floyd; d. Bet. 1840 - 1850. JOSEPH DEATON, b. 1797. MARY DEATON, b. Bet. 1800 – 1801. LEVI DEATON, b. 1801; m. CINDA INGRAM; b. Abt. 1801. DELIAH DEATON, b. 1803; m. JOSEPH SPENCER; b. Abt. 1803. JEMIMA DEATON, b. 1805, Virginia; d. Breathitt County, Kentucky.. JOHN D. "BUCK" DEATON JR., b. 1807, Lee County, Virginia; d. December 13, 1877, Breathitt County, Kentucky. PHOEBE DEATON, b. Abt. 1809. E.G. Spencer; another record gives August 24th as the birth date. He married Margaret McElroy, daughter of Samuel McElroy and Mary Wilson, on March 15, 1831. Margaret was born in 1811 and died in Marion, Missouri on January 10, 1891. There is an interesting bit of information here gathered from the county courthouse in Lebanon showing that the marriage was approved by both Margaret’s father, Samuel, and her grandfather Hugh. There was also a payment of fifty pounds to the McElroy family for Margaret; evidently British currency was still the method of exchange in the city of Washington, state of Kentucky, in 1831 and that a dowry was common in marriage. Edward and Margaret had twelve children; the one of interest is Joseph McElroy Spencer, born May 13, 1835 in Marion, Missouri. Evidently the Edward Spencers and some of the McElroys moved from Washington to Marion, MO between 1831 and 1835. Edward Spencer was in the tax records as a farmer with 122 acres of land in Washington County.
