About Elizabeth Stewart

ELIZABETH STEWART

Elizabeth Stewart, here treated, is the second daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Stewart, second Earl of Angus, who died about 1361. She married Sir Alexander Hamilton of Ballencrieff and Innerwick. They had dispensation to marry. It is dated 15 September 1381. According to the Scots Peerage: "The elder daughter Margaret married Thomas, Earl of Mar, and was left a widow about 1374. Shortly afterwards Elizabeth surrendered to her elder sister all her rights as co-heir of her father, an arrangement which was ratified by King Robert II, by a charter dated 18 February 1378-79. In 1389 the same King confirmed a charter by Margaret, Countess of Angus and Mar, granting to her sister Elizabeth and her husband Alexander Hamilton the lands of Innerwick and others, which Elizabeth had on 28 March 1379 , resigned in the hands of the Steward of Scotland".
