About Elizabeth Cartwright

Theory re: Parents

A number of sites have Mary Batson as the wife of John Trott and mother of Elizabeth Trott Cartwright. But based on my research, if that is correct, I suspect Mary and John were never married but may have had an illegiimate daughter.

Most sites say Mary Batson m 1st Jonas Clay and 2nd William Brookehouse (Brookus), and that seems to hold up. No husband John Trott.

This site describes Mary's promiscuous lifestyle, which makes the "affair" with John Trott more believable -

Jonas & Mary (Batson) Clay: 1st New England Clays

"Bourne, in his History of Kennebunk credits Stephen Batson for being the first to live at Drake’s Island. A neighbor in Wells was the charismatic Antinomian Reverend John Wheelwright. ...

"Stephen’s daughter Mary married Jonas Clay. Clay is first found in Wenham, Mass. In 1643 he is before the courts in Essex and before the courts again in Dover (population 47) in 1648. Others who lived in Dover at the time were swept up in the Antinomian frenzy. In 1652 he had gone from Wells to Sagamore Creek with wife Mary Batson. They had a son Jonas who was raised by Richard Tucker, partner to George Cleeves of the Lygonia Patent.

"Mary’s rap sheet in Saco reads like a trashy novel and for that I apologize but history isn’t always pretty.

"June 28, 1655 Mary, wife of Jonas Clay, was before the court facing charges the she had been keeping company with Robert Cooke in a suspicious way day and night even though neighbors of Cooke had offered him another place to stay. Separation was demanded. On the same day she was charged with daily frequenting of the company of John Davis the smythe of Winter Harbor. The court demanded separation.

"In August of 1655 she charged William Battine for spreading rumors about her activities with John Davis. Davis, previously from Sagamore Creek, was a Blacksmith, a Doctor and Later a Preacher who was often chastised for interrupting the accepted church meetings with his ranting.

"The next court session was held June 30, 1656. Robert Cooke was convicted of breach of court order to stay away from Mary Clay. He received 30 lashes. The court further states that if he does not comply with the new separation, they will sell him to Barbados as a slave. Mary escaped the lashes for this charge because her father Stephen Batson paid her fine. Stephen Greenum was presented for keeping disorders in his house at the neck of land & at Winter Harbor and for entertaining James Harmon, Robert Cooke, Mary Clay, John Davis, and Elizabeth Trott. Elizabeth was the [second?] wife of Simon Trott of Trott’s Island and she was Mary Clay’s sister.

"During the same court session the town of Cape Porpus was ordered to see that a woman live with Mary Clay for preventing any future injury to Mary Clay relating to her disease (convulsive fits) which do frequently seize upon her. Could they have meant Quaking?

"On July 3, 1660 Mary Clay was presented for her “uncivil carages in suffering James Harmon and his wife to ly in bed with her. Witness Miss Spencer and Sarah Harmon”. "

Nantucket marriage records then contain a similar, albeit undated, reference, "Trott, Elizabeth, sister of John, and Edward Cartwright"

My theory is this:
We know Mary's Unnamed sister had a son John, who was named in his grandfather's will (son of deceased Unnamed). This would give Elizabeth a cousin John. Given Mary's lifestyle, it could very well be that her daughter Elizabeth went to live with her cousin's family and considered John a brother. In those days a cousin was sometimes referred to as "sister" or "brother".

Mary's son Jonas Clay II was raised by someone else. "Stephen’s daughter Mary married Jonas Clay. They had a son Jonas who was raised by Richard Tucker, partner to George Cleeves of the Lygonia Patent." (https://clayfamilysociety.net/jonas-clay-1st-new-england-clay/) So it would not be out of character for Mary to let her sister raise Elizabeth.

John Trott and Mary Batson?
Mary Batson dau of Stephen Batson did not marry John Trott

According to Stanley Mack, author of Edward Cartwright (1640-1705) of Nantucket, Mass.:

John Trott, father of Elizabeth and John Trott of Nantucket, died at Cape Porpoise, Maine, in 1666. His wife was one Mary Batson, born about 1640, who after the death of her husband, John Trott, married secondly, James Brookhouse. She was the daughter of Stephen Batson, who was born in 1610 and who died June 30, 1676. He is also mentioned as being one of the signers of the April 28, 1668 petition at Cape Porpoise. By his will, he left money consisting of 20 shillings apiece to two [three] of his grandchildren, John, [Sarah Trott Ashley] and Mary Trott; Elizabeth not being mentioned.'

Some of the above conclusions reached by Stanley Mack appear to be refuted when compared with other sources such as Charles Libby (GDMH:2:82) and Robert Anderson (TGM:7:102), who say that Mary Batson, daughter of Stephen Batson, married first Jonas Clay, and secondly William Brookehouse.

According to Charles Libby (GDMH:2:82) and Robert Anderson (TGM:7:102), "Mary Batson married first Jonas Clay and then William Brookehouse. Her marriage to Jonas Clay had already taken place by 1652, so she was probably born no later than about 1632. Their only known child, son Jonas, married in 1678, and so was born by about 1653, which is consistent with this estimated birth year for Mary Batson."

Simon Trott and Unknown dau. of Stephen Batson?
She would have been mentioned in her grandfather's will with the other children of Simon an dUnknown Batson.

Rather than Elizabeth being a daughter of John Trott and Mary Batson, Charles Libby includes Elizabeth as a fourth child of Simon Trott, and a brother of John Trott, Sr., "Nantucket genealogists say that Edw. Cartwright m. a sis. of John Trott." Nantucket marriage records then contain a similar, albeit undated, reference, "Trott, Elizabeth, sister of John, and Edward Cartwright

However, the other 3 children of Simon Trott and and Unknown Batson are mentioned in their grandfather's (Stephen Batson) will, but Elizabeth is not. And she would have been about 25 when he died.

Until parents of Ellizabeth are confirmed with a reliable source, I am disconnecting her from parents.
