About Elizabeth (Vestal) Jay

Mary Elizabeth Vestal, born 1723 in Chester County, PA; died 1819 in New Burlington, Lawrence

County, OH.

Mary Vestal, daughter of William Vestal, Jr and Elizabeth (Mercer) Vestal, appears to have come with her parents from, Chester County, Pa. to Frederick county Va. about, 1729. They were Friends, but Mary seems to have lost her membership in connection with her marriage with William Jay, who undoubtedly was not a member. She regained her right with the Friends in 1772, probably after the death of her husband, and the removal of the family to South Carolina by an acknowledgment of her outgoing in Marriage; and then, received a removal certificate of membership from Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends in Va. to Bush River Monthly Meeting in South Carolina. The records of Hopewell Meeting are said not to mention any other one of the Jay name, and none of the children appear to have been members with the Friends there. It seems quite certain, however, that John and the four younger members of the family joined the Friends, at Bush River, where they are recorded as members, and John and Mary both married in the meeting in March 1773. In an account given me by my father, about 40 years ago, he said that his uncle, James Jay, was a Baptist preacher and his uncle, David Jay, was a Methodist preacher. Great grand mother Mary (Vestal) Jay came to Ohio with her daughter, Rachel Arnold, in 1805.

Married William Jay, Sr., 1743 in Hopewell Friend's Mtg, Winchester, Frederick County, VA. (born 1720 in Winchester, Frederick County, VA; died Bef. 04 Mar 1773 in Berkeley County, WV.)
