Elizabeth (Hall) Ward, when past her seventy-fourth year, made several journies to Boston, as appears by the Probate records there, before she effected a settlement of his estate with the exorbitant and tyrannical Andros, Governor, Judge of Probate, &c. Considering the distance she resided from Boston, exceeding thirty miles, much of the way a wilderness frequented by lurking savages, a bridle way her road, and on which one of her sons had been a few years before shot down by the enemy at noon day, she must have been a person of great fortitude, and possessed of physical powers in an eminent degree.

She died at Marlborough, where, some years since, her grave stone was standing, on which was an inscription as follows:

"Here lyes the body of Elizabeth Ward, the servant of the Lord -- deceased in 87 year of her age, Dec. ye 9, in the year of our Lord 1700."

  • In the probate files for Jonas Whale and there is no indication she was his daughter.
  • The probate file for her husband (Sudbury, Massachusetts, Town Records Vol 7 Case # 23758 on AmericanAncestry.com). He lets us know that he had two wives but doesn't give any us clue about her possible maiden name or origins.

According to my heritage her surname is Hall, check it out.

The William Ward Wives

First wife: The name of his first wife is unknown. The will of William Ward refers to children "which I have by my former wife" and "all my sonns and daughters which I have by my former wife." This daughters in the plural implies that the first five and maybe six children were by his first wife. It is unlikely that she is the Elizabeth Phillips who married a William Ward at Clarkenwell. Torrey, in his New England Marriages Prior to 1700, lists for William Ward's first wife "Eleanor? __?__" [12] All 11 sources given for this marriage were examined and only one gave the name "Elinor", and it is untrustworthy and flawed secondary source. [13]

Name of second wife: From baptismal records and the will of William Ward it is known that his wife's name was Elizabeth. However, her LNAB remains unknown. There is no evidence which conclusively proves her name or origins. Specifically:

1.Elizabeth Phillips - As mentioned above, a William Ward m. Elizabeth Phillips in 1626. Since we know William Ward had several children by an unknown first wife, this marriage cannot possibly be the marriage to his second wife Elizabeth.

2.Elizabeth Storey - The Newton Genealogy published in 1915 stated that William Ward's second wife was named Elizabeth Storey. [14] This apparently the earliest known reference for this name and has been copied and spread across many secondary references. No evidence has ever been found to support this LNAB. Torrey, in his New England Marriages Prior to 1700, lists for William Ward's second wife "Elizabeth "[Storey?]"." [12] Seventeen of the 18 sources were examined and only 2 gave the name Elizabeth Storey. One was the Newton Genealogy and the other gave just (Story?) and was likely following the Newton Genealogy. [14]

3.Elizabeth Hall - A number of online trees show her as Elizabeth Hall. All of them are unsourced and this name does not occur in any printed reference. There is no evidence whatsoever to support this LNAB.

4.Elizabeth Whale - At least one profile on WikiTree (and several others on the internet) called his second wife Elizabeth Whale, daughter of Jonas Whale and Frances Radley. However, Jonas Whale (d. 1621) did not have a daughter Elizabeth.

She was the second wife to William Ward and bore him ten children. She married William in England in 1634 where she bore him three children. Elizabeth, William and the children in order to escape religious persecution in England sailed to America landing in Boston in 1639. They settled in Sudbury then later Marlborough where she lived out the remainder of her days. (wab)
