About Elizabeth Watkins

Mother of Charles Clay. She survived John Clay and had 2 more husbands (Capt. John Wall and John Tate). She married Capt. John Wall after John Clay died. After Wall died she married John Tate.

Elizabeth Clay Wall is the subject of several depositions in 1662 when she was involved in a brawl with an Indian servant who hit her, bit her, and tried to force her head into an oven (red hot and ready for bread to be set therein).

Elizabeth Hudson Clay Watkins first married John Clay in 1765. After his death she married Henry Watkins in 1784. They moved to Woodford County, Kentucky and operated Watkins Tavern next to the Courthouse in Versailles. She was the mother of 16 children including the stateman, Henry Clay.


Elizabeth Hudson is the daughter of George Hudson and Sarah E. (Jennings) Hudson.
Elizabeth Hudson married Reverend John Clay. There were nine children born to this marriage, including Senator Henry Clay, who was the seventh of the nine children.
John Clay died in 1781, and Elizabeth married Captain Henry Watkins. He moved the family from Hanover County, Virginia to Richmond County, Virginia. Elizabeth bore seven more children to Henry, making her the mother of sixteen children.
Elizabeth is buried in the Lexington Cemetery, in Lexington,Fayette County, Kentucky
