About Elizabeth Wayte

The identity of his mother is uncertain; the most likely candidate appears to be the "wanton wench" Elizabeth Wayte, although the historical record is spotty on this issue, and it is not entirely clear that Wayte is distinct from another of Edward's mistresses, Dame Elizabeth Lucy.

She was never the wife of King Edward IV. She must have been just another of his many many many many mistresses. (Only two women held out for "marriage or nothing": Lady Eleanor Butler and Lady Elizabeth Grey nee Woodville. Edward pre-contracted to the one, clandestinely married the other - and thereby destroyed his sons' chances to succeed him.)

Elizabeth Wayte has been identified with Elizabeth Lucy, a known and longtime mistress of Edward IV - but in that case the birth date given for her is too late by eight to ten years.

  • https://thehistoryjar.com/2016/01/28/edward-ivs-wily-mistress-or-sh... History isn’t totally sure what happened to Elizabeth Lucy nee Wayte. She simply disappears from the records which suggests that either the king was no longer interested in her, she died or if she was from the lower social orders simply got on with her life along with countless other undocumented medieval people. Putting a post on Elizabeth Lucy together is rather like a composite character exercise!
