About Elizabeth Webb

Not a known wife of John Richmond, of Taunton

11 children of Sir John Philipps, 1st Bt. and Anne Perrot -

5th daughter, Elizabeth Philipps m. 1st, Edward Medhope

Biography

Elizabeth's first name is proven by an IPM style Inquisitional document for her first husband, Edmond Medhop in 1621.

Absolute proof has been obtained that she was daughter of Sir John Philipps of Picton Castle, member of Parliament for Pembrokeshire (note that the name is spelled in an unconventional way compared to the usual modern spelling).[1][2] Her father was "of Picton Castle" (Pembrokeshire) and was a baronet in that county so it does seem likely she was born there.

The proof of her origin appears in the contemporaneous funeral record of her husband Edmond/Edmund Medhop in 1621. This record listed her as Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Philipps of Picton Castle.[3]

Edmond's IPM-like document[4] listed his child and heir as Francis ("Francisc' Medhop est ejus fil' & her'") who was 6 years old at the time of Edmond's death. His funeral record stated that Francis married Margery Trevor, daughter of Sir Edward, Knight and that Francis had issue. It also confirmed that Edmond's wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Philipps of Picton Castle. It stated that Edmond had three children but the only other one listed was a daughter who's name is difficult to decipher and looks somewhat like "Rosi" or "Kosi", also listed as a heir with a note that she married but nothing of to whom or whether she had issue as well.

What seems to be a form of an Inquisition Post Mortem for Edmond in heavily-abbreviated Latin listed a great deal of property at his passing. It seems to say that at the time of his death he was siezed of land and property at "Toma al' Tomahy in co' Regis" (possibly "Tomagh") which should be King's County (this property was listed first along with many other villages (Ballywilliam Ballykillens, Tullagh, Clonenet etc etc).

The document stated that his widow Elizabeth Medhop was still alive and seems to say that she would receive a third part of her dower (dotabil' est de terc' parte) and might specify the property she receives.[4]

Per the Lloyd family history by Niall O'Brien[5]:

...his widow was recorded as holding his property in Ely O’Carroll. She was recorded as one of only two resident undertakers – the rest lived away from their new estates NB: Ely O'Carroll covers the area of south Offaly and north Tipperary.

After Edmond died, Elizabeth supposedly married John Richmond of Rodbourne Cheney, Wilts (or "Rodborne-Cheney" on ancestry.com when searching for parish registers) before his 1641 death. John's first wife was also Elizabeth (Nicholas) which has added to some confusion and conflation. To make things worse John Richmond, who died at Rodbourne-Cheney, has been conflated with John Richmond of Ashton Keynes, Wilts early immigrant to New England who's wife's name is unknown. These men may have been related as both used "alias Webb" in some documents. Elizabeth's father's will written in 1629 said that he believed her to be in Ireland at the time (her first husband Edmond died in 1621). If true, then it seems likely she returned to England and married John Richmond (if she did marry him) likely in the early 1630s before Richmond's death in 1641.

Elizabeth apparently signed over her executorship and rights to Richmond's estate to her step-on Edward Richmond alias Webb. The 'Fortunatus' site cited below has this text, presumably from the John Richmond's probate:

Where as John Richmond als Webb, Esq, my late husband, made me, Eliz. Webb, sole ex'trix, I assign my executorship and interests to my son-in-law(step-son) Edward Richmond alias Webb, son and heir of said John, 8th December,. 1641. Elizabeth E. W. Webb Witnesses: Thos. fforlyer, Robert Keeble(No. 61)

These documents (will and renunciation) are held at the Wiltshire Archives; the Fortunatus site identifies them as Arch Wilts, 1641, file 46. No.61 (renunciation) and 62 (will/probate) with the note "Proved by Edward Richmond alias Webb, the son 9 December, 1641.". The current Wiltshire Archives reference is P3/R/121 unfortunately not available online. Descriptive text on the catalog includes: Title: Administration bond, inventory, renunciation, will; Date 1641; Personal Name: Richmond alias Webb, John; Place Name: Rodbourne Cheney/Wiltshire

Elizabeth's final fate has not been determined.
