Elizabeth Webster

John Webster, 18th Governor of the Colony of Connecticut, was born in Cossington, Leicestershire, England, the son of Matthew Webster (1548–1623) and his wife, Elizabeth Ashton.

Elizabeth Ashton was born 29 May, 1566 in Cossington, Leichester, England. The 1615 inquisition post mortem of Elizabeth's father-in-law John Webster shows that Elizabeth was the daughter of John "Aston" of Woodborough, co. Notts.: "By his deed dated 16 April, 29 Elizabeth, 1587, and in consideration of a marriage between Matthew Webster, his son and heir apparent, and Elizabeth Aston, the daughter of John Aston, of Woodborowe, co. Notts, gent., ..."[1]

The 1592 will of Elizabeth's husband Matthew Webster lists his brother-in-law James Aston; and it was witnessed by John Aston, who could have been another brother of Elizabeth, or perhaps her father.[2]

Elizabeth Ashton Webster died 17 Feb, 1640 and was buried in Melton-Mowbray, Leicester, England[3]

Lettie was not part of her name. Lettie was John Webster's mother's first name. That John [son of Lettie] is NOT related to Governor John of Connecticut. Lettie lived in Suffolk not Leicestershire

it is unlikely her father was the John Aston who married Elizabeth Mainwaring. The Webster's were decent gentry, they co-owned a farm with her father but would not have had the opportunity to known the Mainwaring's. John Ashton signed with a mark, I doubt Elizabeth Mainwaring's husband was illiterate, if anyone cares to look that John Ashton's signature can probably be found. Also the Webster's were converts from Judaism (proven by DNA) and Matthew Webster was born only a little over a century after the family arrived in England, Again, it is unlikely he married Elizabeth Mainwaring's daughter. It is tempting to connect successful families in America to aristocratic families in England and often wrong.
