About Elizabeth de Braose

Elizabeth's Debenham family was a known owner of Wenham Hall and Manor and so the Debenhams passed it on to Elizabeth and Sir Thomas Brews. Thomas also was heir to the Topcroft Estate from his own family. The date of birth for Elizabeth has been moved back to 1424 because evidence is showing that the daughter of Elizabeth and Thomas named Margery was born in 1446 and Robert was born circa 1443-44 right after his half-brother, William Brews of Wenham and Stinton. Therefore Elizabeth was born prior to 1430. Quote from Rootsweb discussion on whether there was a Richard Wenham in Little Wenham whose family passed the Wenham manor on to the Brewse family or was it the Debenhams? "(Have a look at www.historyof parliementonline for their biographies). Her brother Gilbert was eventually convicted of treason after the uprising associated with Perkin Warbeck 1491-1495. I've seen a suggestion that she eventually paid to reclaim some of the family land.... So.... Was the Thomas who first came into Sussex in fact a DEBENHAM, but quite happy to be known as Thomas from Wenham until that name eventually was accepted as his family name?" This implies a theory that it was really a Debenham using the surname as Wenham to hide his identity. And then it was actually a daughter of the Debenhams who married Thomas Brewse as we have it now on this profile. The link to the Rootsweb discussion is at the profile of Richard Wenham born 1410.
