- Hugh d: bet 1377-89. His 1st son, William de Wherton (note the spelling change) b: abt 1327, inherited the manor. William d: bet 1393-1417, after having at least 4 sons. Williams 1st son, 'Henry de Wherton was b: abt 1350 and d: in the 1430's. He m: Elizabeth Musgrave, daughter of Sir Thomas Musgrave, and died without issue (although he lived to be almost 90)'. Hence, William's 2nd son, John de Wharton (note the name change) was next in line. But John died before his 1st brother Henry, as did John's 1st son, William. Therefore, John's 2nd son Thomas became heir to the manor and family fortune.
- Meanwhile, this latter Thomas, being the 2nd son of a 2nd son, thinking he had no chance at the family fortune, went off to seek his own. He was eventually knighted and became the 1st Sir Wharton, Sir Thomas Wharton that is (note the de is dropped). Sir Thomas m: abt 1436 to a Lowther. His heir was Henry Wharton b: abt 1440 and m: Alice Conyers. I know little else about him. Henry's heir was the 2nd Sir Thomas Wharton. He m: Agnes Warcop. His heir was the 3rd Sir Thomas Wharton, b: abt 1495.
