MARGARET DE ARUNDEL, married (as his 1st wife) WILLIAM LE BOTELER, Knt., de jure 2nd Lord Boteler of Wem, of Wem, Whixall, and Hinstock, Shropshire, and Almington and Tyrley, Staffordshire, Knight of the Shire for Shropshire, son and heir of William le Boteler, 1st Lord Boteler of Wem [see BLACKMER 7], by his 1st wife Beatrice. He was born 8 Sept. 1298. They had one son, William, Knt. [3rd Lord Boteler of Wem]. He was never summoned to Parliament. He served in Flanders in 1340 in the retinue of Reginald de Cobham. In 1344 he obtained special immunity from the king from bearing arms "in respect of his impotency." He married (2nd) about 1354 JOAN DE SUDELEY, daughter of John de Sudeley, 2nd Lord Sudeley, of Sudeley, Gloucestershire, by Eleanor, presumably daughter of Robert de Scales, 2nd Lord Scales. They had one son, Thomas, Knt. [de jure 4th Lord Sudeley] [see BELKNAP 10]. SIR WILLIAM LE BOTELER, 2nd Lord Boteler of Wem, died 22 Dec. 1361. His wife, Joan, died before 11 August 1367.

They had one daughter, Elizabeth. His wife Elizabeth, was living in May 1361. He was summoned to Parliament 23 Feb. 1367/8 and 6 April 1369. SIR WILLIAM LE BOTELER, 3rd Lord Boteler of Wem, died 14 August 1369.

He was summoned to Parliament from 28 Dec. 1375 to 20 Oct. 1379, by writs directed Roberto de Ferrers de Wemme. SIR ROBERT DE FERRERS, 1st Lord Ferrers of Wem, died 24 or 31 Dec. 1380. His widow, Elizabeth, married (2nd) before 24 Nov. 1381 JOHN SAY, Knt. He was living 5 July 1395. She married (3rd) before 25 Oct. 1398 (date of papal indult) THOMAS MOLINGTON, Knt., of London and, in right of his wife, of Wem, Shropshire. He died testate 7 May 1408, and was buried in the Chapel of St. Mary in the College of the Crutched Friars, London. Elizabeth died testate 19 June 1411, to be buried in the Church of the Crutched Friars next the Tower of London.

• In June 1343, William le Botiler proposes to enfeoff two Trustees in the Manors of Hinstock and Tyrley, and in one-third of Wem, and that the reversion of two-thirds of Wem, then held in dower by Ela widow of William le Botiler deceased, should devolve on the same Trustees. The Trustees, being seized, were to settle the premises on the said William, their Feoffor, and the heirs of his body ; — with remainder to his right heirs. An Inquest held on this subject found the proposal to be non-injurious to the Crown.5 The Inquest taken in January 1362, on

• William le Botiler's deaths says accordingly that Hinstock, which he had held in capite for half a kuight's fee, had been entailed on the heirs of his body by certain Trustees and by Royal license. William, son and heir of the deceased, was now 30 years of age.1
• With this William, who died on August 14, 1369, the elder male line of Botiler of Wem expired. Wem and Hinstock were entailed on the heirs of his body, and so passed to his only daughter 'Elizabeth, who at the time of his death was aged 24 years and upwards.2 She conveyed the Barony of Wem to her husband, Robert de Ferrers'. Their eldest son, Robert de Ferrers, died in '1410, his mother Elizabeth still living'. He left two daughters and coheirs, Elizabeth born about 1393, and Mary, born about 1394. On the 'death of their Grandmother (June 19, 1411)', Elizabeth was wife of John son of Ralph Baron Greystock, and Mary was wife of Ralph son of Ralph Nevill, Earl of Westmoreland.3 The Barony of Wem is now in abeyance between the descendants of these two ladies.4

She had one son with Robert Ferrars and no children with her second and third husbands.

There are three distinct families by the name Boteler, (1) those which settled early in Ireland, the first of which was Theobald le Boteler, some of whose descendants took the anglicized name Butler; (2) the family of Boteler of Warrington in Lancashire; and (3) the family of Botiler, Boteler, Botiller of Wem in Shropshire, and of Oversley in Warwickshire. This particular family, of Wem and Oversley, appear to have been recorded most often as Botiler, and as such are shown with this spelling.

Baron Boteler of Wemme, was summ. to Parl. as " Robert Ferrers de Wemme, Chev." from 28 Dec. 49 Edw. III. 1375, to 20 Oct. 3 Rich. II. 1379; ob. 1380. Robert Ferrers, his s. and h., died 1410, s. P. M., vita matris, without having been summ. to Parl., leaving Elizabeth, wife of John, son of Ralph Lord Greystock, a"t. 18 years, and Mary, wife of Ralph Nevill, younger son of Ralph Earl of Westmoreland, «t. 17 years, his daughters and coheirs. If this Barony be considered as a Barony created by the writ 28 Dec. 1375, it is in Abeyance between the descendants of these two daughters and coheirs; and such would also appear to be the case if the writ of 1375 were only an extension of the Barony of Boteler of Wemme, since Robert Ferrers, the father of the two daughters and coheirs, was the representative of his mother, whether she had or had not issue by her 2nd and 3rd husbands.— Vide Boteler of Wemme. I will that all my silver vessels, excepting what I have bequeathed, be disposed of for the health of my soul, and the soul of Robert Ferrers, my first husband, and the soul of Sir Thomas Molynton, my second husband3. To Joan Grauncester, my daughter, a cup of gold, which formerly belonged to her brother; to Elizabeth Molynton, a cup of gold; to Thomas Molynton; Maud Cavendish; Elizabeth Lisle, "filise mese spiritual!.«" And I appoint Joan Graunceston, my daughter, my executrix. 'Daughter and sole heir of William Boteler, of Wemme; she married, first, Robert Baron Ferrers, of Wemme; and secondly, Sir Thomas Molynton, Knight, and died 12 Henry IV. Dugdale, vol. i. p. 269. But in his History of Warwickshire, he says that this Elizabeth married, secondly, John de Say, and thirdly, Thomas de Molynton.
