From https://kinnexions.com/ancestries/matteson.htm:

Several earlier publications identify (the wife of Hugh Parsons) as Elizabeth (b. 1613; d. after 1684), widow of William ENGLAND. William and Elizabeth ENGLAND had children: William (b. 1641); Josiah; Eleanor married Jul 27, 1665 Jeremiah WESTCOTT; Susannah married Ephraim CARPENTER; and Elizabeth married Isaac DOTY of Oyster Bay. The family of Elizabeth ENGLAND suggests that she married Hugh no earlier than 1650, but certainly by 1662. Since Hugh's daughter Grace was born by about 1645, and daughter Hannah, whose first child was born in 1670, was probably born by 1650, it appears that they were children of a first marriage by Hugh. The provision in his will that the residue of his estate go to Elizabeth's daughters suggests that the estate included property brought to the marriage by the widow Elizabeth ENGLAND. This conjecture is supported by the sale of 18 acres of land in 1662 by Hugh and his wife Elizabeth, and by Hugh referring to Elizabeth as his "present wife" in the 1672 bond addendum.

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-482375:

Elizabeth _____ was born about 1613. This is shown by the following 1673 Deposition:

"Elizabeth ye wife of Hugh Persons of ye Towne of Portsmouth, Aged sixty yeares or thereabouts being According to ye Law Engaged, & sworne, Deposeth, & Testifieth yt shee being wth Goodwife Earle, desired to lay forth ye Body of the Deceased Mrs Rebeca Cornell, they on ye Sabath Day towards night, Accordingly layd forth the Body of the sd Deceased, & saith yt then there was noe Apeareance of Blood about ye Corps, but comeing thether on ye Munday there had beene in the roome where ye Corps lay, Thomas Cornell wth Wm. Hall to measure ye Corps for ye makeing A Coffin to interr Her in, & some saying ye corps did purge, this depont went to see whether ye corps did purge or not, & found yt ye corps did not purge, onely saw yt shee had bled fresh Blood at ye Nose; and ffurther saith not." Marriages & Children

Elizabeth1 had two daughters[1] as will be shown.

Susanna (Wood) Carpenter England
Elizabeth2 (Wood) Doughty
Elizabeth did not marry William England.[1]

Elizabeth was married to Hugh Parsons, as shown by his 11 Jan 1684 (proved 14 March) will in which besides mentioning his own children and a grandson, he named "my wife's two daughters, living on Long Island, viz: Susannah Carpenter and Elizabeth Doty" Showing that Hugh Parsons and his wife Elizabeth1 had both been married before and had children by previous marriages.

"Ephraim Carpenter and Susanah Ingland were Married ye 3d day of December 1677 by Thomas Townsend Justice in ye North-riding of York Shire" (ie. Oyster Bay)

From this it was concluded that Susanna Carpenter and therefore Elizabeth Doty (wife of Isaac) had been born with the surname England. This led to the long held belief that Elizabeth1 the mother had been married to William England.[2]

Elizabeth1 (____) married John Wood then Hugh Parsons.

The 7 May 1655 settlement of the estate of John Wood, shows that he had a wife Elizabeth and young daughters Susanna and Elizabeth2, besides sons John, Thomas, William and George, from an earlier wife. The daughters were to receive £8 each upon reaching the age of 16. William was to receive land that his mother in law (Elizabeth1, the widow,) held until her death.[3]

1673. A deed in which William Wood, son of John Wood, sold his future interest in land in the possession of "Hugh Parsons his wife" who had a life interest under the terms of the settlement of John Wood's estate.

17 May 1675 Hugh Person of Portsmouth in the Colony of Rhode Island & providence plantations owed to Josiah England of Dartmouth £20. The condition of the obligations being that he or his heirs shall pay to Susanna England, the wife of Josiah England, or her heirs £8 and to Elizabeth Doughty, wife of Isaac Daughty of Oyster Bay in Long Island or her heirs £8. This is the eight pounds they were to receive from their father John Wood's estate, which passed from their mother Elizabeth1 to her now husband Hugh Parsons.

1684. Back to the will of Hugh Parsons who now names the daughters of his wife Elizabeth1 as Susanna Carpenter and Elizabeth Daughty.

Elizabeth (Unknown) married firstly William England.

After William England died, his widow Elizabeth England married secondly John Wood about 1645.[1]

He was the father of her two daughters

  • Susanna (Wood) (England) Carpenter and
  • Elizabeth (Wood) Doty.

After John Wood died, his widow Elizbeth Wood married Hugh Parsons sometime after 1655.

Mrs. Elizabeth Parsons had a life interest in John Wood's estate which was settled in 1655. John's son William, by a previously unknown wife, sold his stake in the property to Hugh Parsons who wrote a promissory note to Josiah England and Susanna England his wife, and Elizabeth (Wood) (England) Doty, wife of Isaac Doty of Oyster Bay.[2] This means that Elizabeth's marriage to Hugh Parsons occurred after 1655.

William and Elizabeth ENGLAND had children:

  1. William (b. 1641);
  2. Josiah (b abt 1642)
  3. Eleanor (1644-1691) married Jul 27, 1665 Jeremiah WESTCOTT;

After his first wife died, John Wood married second, Elizabeth. Whether they ever had any children together is unknown, but his two young children, Susanna and Elizabeth are assumed to be by his second wife, Elizabeth. After John Wood died, his widow Elizabeth married Hugh Parson who had his property adjacent to the Wood's.

  1. Susannah (b abt 1645) married Ephraim CARPENTER; and
  2. Elizabeth (b abt 1651) married Isaac DOTY of Oyster Bay
