The origins of Hugh Parsons of Portsmouth RI are not presently known. He was born about 1613[1] and died between Jan 11 1684 (will written) & March 14, 1684 (will proved) in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.[2]

He married 1st Elizabeth, last name unknown, and secondly, By 1662, Elizabeth, widow of John Wood. [3]Elizabeth was not the widow of William England.

Hugh Parsons had two daughters Hannah and Grace. Grace probably about 1637 based on the birth of her first child and Hannah born about 1649.

On July 20, 1670, Hugh Parsons declared, "that, having taken into my custody the estate of my grandchild, Hugh Bailey, left and given him by his deceased father, William Bailey, I covenant in the sum of 100 pounds, that at my death and death of present wife, my aforesaid grandson shall be true and absolute owner of all my land I now possess, with buildings, etc." Also April 15, 1672, "If said Hugh die before decease of wife or self, then above mentioned land shall return to my daughter Hannah or her next heir, and to daughter Hannah, to bring up grandson, is given a cow."

In the will of Hugh Parsons (see complete will below), which was dated January 11, 1684, and proved March 14, 1684, he gives to his grandson, Hugh Bailey, at decease of wife, his house and land, and a third of his stock of movables, but if Hugh Bailey die before he enjoy it, then to his heirs. Wife to bring up grandson, and he to be helpful to her.

Hugh Parsons was deputy in 1678. He and his wife were both born about 1613. He died in 1684 as above indicated, his wife some time later.

Hugh is first found at Portsmouth, RI in 1658, when he was appointed a juror. A deed dated on Jul. 3, 1662 names his wife as Elizabeth. Hugh was a freeman in 1663, a member of a troop of horse in 1667, and deputy in 1678.

Family

Daughters of Hugh Parsons by 1st wife

  1. Grace - d. after 1677, RI. The birth of her fifth child in 1665 suggests that she was born by about 1645. Grace married first William BAILEY (d. by 1670), supposedly the son of William BAILEY and grandson of Palmer BAILEY. Grace married second 1674 Thomas LAWTON (b. Jun. 26, 1655, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI), who had four children by his first wife Elizabeth SALSBURIE. Children of Grace and William BAILEY: John married Sutton; Joseph married Sarah DUNN; Edward married Frances; Hugh married first Anna, and second Abigail WILLIAMS; Stephen married Susanna; and Samuel.
  2. Hannah - b. probably at Portsmouth, RI; d. after 1693, RI. Married Henry MATTESON.

Several earlier publications identify his wife as Elizabeth (b. 1613; d. after 1684), widow of William ENGLAND. William and Elizabeth ENGLAND had children: William (b. 1641); Josiah; Eleanor married Jul 27, 1665 Jeremiah WESTCOTT; Susannah married Ephraim CARPENTER; and Elizabeth married Isaac DOTY of Oyster Bay. The family of Elizabeth ENGLAND suggests that she married Hugh no earlier than 1650, but certainly by 1662. Since Hugh's daughter Grace was born by about 1645, and daughter Hannah, whose first child was born in 1670, was probably born by 1650, it appears that they were children of a first marriage by Hugh. The provision in his will that the residue of his estate go to Elizabeth's daughters suggests that the estate included property brought to the marriage by the widow Elizabeth ENGLAND. This conjecture is supported by the sale of 18 acres of land in 1662 by Hugh and his wife Elizabeth, and by Hugh referring to Elizabeth as his "present wife" in the 1672 bond addendum.

The origins of Hugh PARSONS of RI are not presently known. A thorough review of available documents leads to the conclusion that there were three separate men named Hugh PARSONS living in Springfield, MA, Watertown, MA and Portsmouth, RI in the mid-1600s. A brief narrative on the family is found in Ancestral Lines, Third Edition, by Carl Boyer, 3rd (Santa Clarita, CA 1998), pp. 459-60.

  • (a) Hugh Parsons appears on the Springfield Records in 1645, when he married Mary Lewis of Wales. He died, June 18, 1675, at Watertown.
  • (b) Hugh Parsons, born 1613, was made freeman of Portsmouth, R. I., in 1663; he enlisted in a troop of horse August 10, 1667, and died in 1684. His family became extinct.

Thomas Parsons, of Gt. Milton, Devonshire, married Catherine Sydenham, by whom he had sons, Thomas 2nd, Hugh and Richard. Hugh m. a Pierpont, and had a son John of London. "Some of this family were among the early emigrants to America." Thomas 2nd, was the father of Sir Thomas Parsons Knt. who married 1614, Lady Catherine Ratcliffe of ancient lineage. (See New Eng. Hist. and Gen. Register.)

Hugh Parsons of Portsmouth, Rhode Island was born 1613, in Gt. Torrington, Devonshire, Eng. He first came to Salem, Mass., where he married Elizabeth , widow of William Ingle or Engle of Salem. He was a close friend of Elder Obediah Holmes, and perhaps a relative. I lack the dates of his marriage and death. Also those of his wife.

He must not be confounded with another Hugh Parsons, who came from Wales, date and place of birth not known, and who first came to Springfield, Mass., where he m. (1) Mary , the divorced wife of a Lewis, from Wales. This Hugh died in Watertown. The first named died in Portsmouth, R. I. Are his English parents known? W. W.

Comment: as Hugh Parsons is known (by deposition) to have been born about 1613 these parents are ruled out, and disconnected April 2014.

probably not the son of Hugh Parsons, of Great Milton
