Ellen Pompeo

Ellen Kathleen Pompeo (/pʌmˈpɛoʊ/, born November 10, 1969)[1] is an American actress and producer. She rose to fame for her portrayal of Meredith Grey in the long-running hit ABC medical drama series Grey's Anatomy (2005–present).

She was "discovered" as an actress while working at SoHo Bar & Grill in New York City.

Family

Ellen Kathleen Pompeo was born in Everett, Massachusetts, to Kathleen B. (O'Keefe) and Joseph E. Pompeo, a salesman. She is of Italian (from her paternal grandfather, immigrant Angelo Pompeo, born in Avellino); Irish, and some English ancestry.

Her mother died of a painkiller overdose when Ellen was four, and her father remarried soon after; he died on September 1, 2012.[8] She has five siblings: three sisters and two brothers. She was nicknamed the pencil, and stracciatella (an ice cream flavor).[9]

Pompeo began dating music producer Chris Ivery in 2003. They married on November 9, 2007, with former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg as the legal witness to the ceremony.[34] Pompeo and Ivery have two daughters: Stella Luna (born September 2009)[35] and Sienna May (born August 2014, via surrogacy).[36]
