About Elmer Bennett

ELMER BENNETT was born in Fairfield Township Cumberland Co NJ Nov 27 1805 He is a son of William and Esther Elmer Bennett. Nathan Bennett an ancester of our subject was a son of Samuel Bennett one of the first settlers of Western New Jersey and the first to erect a saw and grist mill. He was a native of Holland and reared a large family among whom were Jonathan and Samuel the great grandfather of our subject. Nathan married Sarah Bateman who bore Nathan William Samuel John Josiah Sarah Abigail Ruth and Rhoda all married in New Jersey Jonathan Elmer the maternal grandfather was a prominent man in that State and for many years was a civil engineer in that country He survcyed and made a deed from the State to Samuel Bennett of several sections of land in that State at the nominal price of five cents per acre After Bennett's death the land was divided between his heirs none of whom are present owners
He married Lucy Ann Jaggers (1811 - 1891).

Dr. George Pulsifer was the first husband of Mary Bennett, Elmer and Lucy's daughter, and after Dr. Pulsifer's death, Frank was adopted by Elmer and Lucy Ann.
Obituary
Crawfordsville, Ia., Sept 21. -- Deacon Elmer Bennett died at his residence the 20th , inst. He was one of the old settlers of this township. He was born in Fairfield township, Cumberland county, New Jersey, November 27, 1805, being almost 86 years of age. The Bennett family moved to Shelbyville, Ind., in the spring of 1836, and to Iowa in 1838, locating on Brush Creek, in Des Moines County; came to this county in 1840. His wife, who still survives him, was Miss Lucy A. Jaggers. They have been married fifty-nice years. The farm on which Deacon Bennett lived so many years was entered about 1843, he having purchased it from Hon. John H. Gear. Deacon Bennett was a member of the Congregational church for more than fifty years. After the disbanding of the church at this place, he united with the Wesleyan Methodist church, of which he was an honored member at his death. Deacon Bennett has ever been respected as a conscientious Christian gentleman having the confidence and respect of the entire community in which he has lived so long. He was a republican in politics and regarded it a Christian duty to faithfully deposit his ballot. The funeral services will take place Tuesday morning. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. Mother Bennett is seriously ill.
