Elmer was born on a farm in Kansas. He learned to farm at a very early age. Dr. McCollum was a graduate of Kansas University, class of 1903. He received a B.A. and a Master of Arts in 1904 and Yale University Doctor of Philosophy, 1906. At the time of his death he was Chairman Emeritus, Dept. of Biochemistry, John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, where he was an associate for many years. Dr. McCollum won National and International acclaim for his discoveries of vitamins A,B, and D. Also for his discovery of the importance of the trace elements and fro the profound influence he has exerted upon the science of biochemistry and nutrition.
