Elmer Tarkka

Elmer was born in Port Arthur on May 29, 1934 to Eero and Martta Tarkka (Peura). He was employed with the federal government as a grain inspector for the Canadian Grain Commission, retiring in 1990 after 32 years of service. Elmer was an excellent provider and a true family man. The love and care of his family was always his main concern.

Elmer truly enjoyed the family camp at Eaglehead Lake for many years – building, fishing, hunting, cutting firewood, gardening and always ending the day with a hot steam bath in the sauna he built. He was a self-taught builder and an excellent craftsman and woodworker, spending a lot of time in the workshop, he again, built himself. He designed and handcrafted beautiful furniture and completed numerous home renovations and improvements inside and out. You could always find him puttering in the yard working on a new project. Nothing was too challenging for Elmer!

Relax time included watching golf and curling on T.V., gambling and casino trips to Hinckley, Minnesota.

Elmer faced his recent unexpected health challenge with a fighting spirit – a finnish sisu determination. He fought till he could sadly fight no more.

He was a good man, he was greatly loved, and we miss him dearly.

Elmer is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 54 years Darlene (Porco) and his children Alan, Ron, Lesley and Randy. Other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Eino, sister Ella Oikonen and nephew Tim Oikonen.
