4/20/99 - by Joyce P. MS " , Mary: age 17, female, b. LA, no schooling " , Muhuldy J.: age 2 mos, female, b. Anderson Co., TX " , George W: age 16, male, b. MS, no schooling
[**George W. Campbell is my great-great grandfather and brother of Elam/Elon Campbell! JPF] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7/20/99 - The following information was sent to me (JPF) by descendant, Sue Campbell Gray of Alanta, TX. "Notes It is known by research of the Mississippi Federal Census, that Elon or Elan, was last shown on the Franklin County 1840 Census, as head of household.
In the year of 1849, a son of Charles C. Campbell, Elan A., who had remained in Franklin County, Mississippi, discovered the where-abouts and death of his father, and was entitled to 1/3 of the estate, arrived and claimed his share of the estate.
The records note that at the time there is yet belonging to the estate, 1380 acres of Charles C. Campbell's Headright, 80 acres near Parker's Bluff, and 640 acres which had been the Headright of Charles' deceased son, Malathiel Campbell. Just how it was settled is not clear.
Elan A. campbell is listed on the 1850 Census of Anderson County [TX].
On March 29, 1854, Marion Moore, Pamelia C. Moore and E. A. Campbell, sold 1000 acres of land on Cedar Lake, 16 miles northwest of Palestine, which had been part of the father's headright, for $1000.00 to William C. Daniel, and a little later they sold 175 acres in the same area, to William Daniel. However, he apparently failed to make his payments and they sued him. Case went to the State Supreme Court in 1859, outcome has not been researched. "
Jan. 2001: Found E.A. Campbell with wife, Mary (Strickland) and four children (Mahuldy Josephine, George, Victoria and John) in the 1860 Sabine Parish, LA Census. Also, found Elon's and Mary's marriage record. This family also appears in the Sabine Parish, LA 1870 Census records. I haven't traced forward more, yet, but am assuming that Elon probably died in LA. Will check further. JF
