Elvi Barney

Elvi Irene Barney, 92, of Bemidji, MN, died Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the Sanford Senior Behavioral Center, Bemidji.

Memorial Services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home with Pastor Corey Fuhrman officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Elvi Irene Pelto was born June 14, 1920 in Calumet, MN to Karl and Naimi (Yrjonheikki) Pelto. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Greenway High School. She worked at the Bovey Mercantile. She met and eventually married, William Laitala on July 3, 1941 in Bovey. They purchased her parents farm near Calumet and would stay there until William’s death in 1976. In 1978 she married Marvin Barney and moved to his home in Marble, MN. Marvin died in 1982. She then moved to Grand Rapids and eventually to Bemidji. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, cards, scrabble and taking care of her dog. She made rag rugs from a loom that William made by hand. She also enjoyed traveling with Marvin, and also with her cousins. She was a member of various community organizations and spent her time taking care of her large garden.

She is survived by her son, Raymond (Carole) Laitala of Bemidji; 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Laitala in 1976; husband Marvin Barney in 1982; twin sister, Ava and daughter, Karen Laitala.
