About Elvira Spencer

Elvira McCracken "came to this country in a covered wagon when she was quite a young girl; the Indians were still living here. Elvira McCracken was the daughter of John McCracken (who was born in Ireland, in Cork County). Her mother was Margaret Parks, of Virginia. Samuel O. Spencer and Elvira McCracken married May 22, 1827 and had four children..." --"A Sketch of the Three Spencer Brothers, Thomas Harper, Samuel Milton and William Micajah Spencer," Greene County Democrat, June 12, 1931, p. 4

ELVIRA MCCRACKEN married (1) SAMUEL O. SPENCER May 21, 1827 in Greene Co., AL. and (2) THOMAS T. TYREE December 20, 1842 in Greene Co., AL.

Thomas H. Spencer's grandmother was born in the Newberry District, South Carolina and was a remarkable woman. At the age of fifteen she married her first husband, and after his death married Colonel TT Tyree, a cotton broker at Mobile. She outlived her first husband fifty-eight years and also her second husband. She had eleven brothers and sisters, four children, and many nephews and nieces, and outlived them all except two nieces, dying at the age of eighty-nine.
