Border Watch, Sat 13 May 1916: DEATH PRATT.-- On the 11th inst at his residence, Williamstown, Emmanuel, the beloved father of Mr James Pratt (England), Mr E J Pratt, and Miss P Pratt (Mount Gambier), aged 77 years.
The next trace I can find for Emanuel in Australia, is a will for probate in Mount Gambier for 150 pounds, June 1916. It is reported in the "Border Watch" of Wed 21 Jun 1916. How common is the name? There is a good chance he is our man, arrived October 4 1849 in "Mahomed Shah", aged 8 yrs, with his mother not long dead.
His obituary is quite informative. "A resident of the South-East for 56 years, Mr Emanuel Pratt, died on Thursday last at his residence at the east end of town. He had been ailing for about three years, and the cause of his death was heart failure. Deceased was born in Yorkshire, England, 77 years ago, and was brought to Melbourne by his parents when he was seven years of age. For about three years he lived in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria, including the diggings, and then went to Adelaide. He remained in Adelaide for some 12 years, and came to the South-East about 1860. For 50 years of that time he was a resident of Mount Gambier. His wife predeceased him ten years ago. Mr Pratt leaves a family of three, namely, Mr James Pratt now in a munitions factory in England; Miss Isabella Pratt, Mount Gambier; and Mr EJ Pratt, Mount Gambier. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon, the Rev. James Cully BA., officiating at the graveside. Messrs James and Walter were funeral directors." See documents.
