Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinka and Gumerarcha Advertiser 2 Nov 1950
Clearing Sale
Amid the verdure-clad and immemorial Hills of the Mount Lofty Range, upon a flat clothed in a veritable paradise of pasture there was conducted on Friday the l3th October, a clearing sale of the dairy stock and effects of the late Herbert Edwin Bottrill, of Woodside.-The sale had been widely advertised, and the Courier" announced in a full column of Its pages the fifty or more Guernsey and Guernsey/Shorthorn cross cows," all Guernsey bull, and innumerable and varied effects that were offered by auction by two very capable officers of the S.A. Farmers' Co-op. Union Ltd
Hqrses, poultry,, a tractor and plant, and a Bedford track (which realised some £800) ware among the long list
of the items: listed for sale which was a great success.
All roads seem to have led to the old property, and many hundreds of interested prospective buyers assembled
to participate in the bidding. The weather was perfect, and, as one came in eight of the estate, the hundred or more motor oars and vehicles left no doubts in the minds of the drivers that they had arrived at their destination.
They later found that an excellent luncheon and afternoon tea! had been provided by the Woodside Methodist Ladies' Guild . The writer had been motored over from Meadows by Mr. D. P. Bell, whose fine property on Jupiter Flats is well known; but, upon arrival, he left Mr. Bell and a friend to make their own tour of inspection, while he himself surveyed the busy scene, and conversed with several of those who were not too busy following the bidding. Among such was Mr. A. Schoell, whose peopie have been in the Woodside district for nearly a century, and whose property adjoins that of the late Mr. Bottrill. His holding is of about 110 acres and at present he is milking some 21 cows, the product being sent each day to Adelaide. In course of conversation, he was of the opinion that, while prices at present were better in comparison with those of an earlier date, the work on a farm of
such a description demanded continuous application, and the nett return was not what it should be when compared with the returns from those occupations requiring less labor. He and his two sons rum the property,
Leaving Mr. Schoell, the writer made his way to strive to gain a short interview with the widow of the late Mr. Bottrill, and was met with the utmost friendliness. Mrs. Bottrill is now in her 79th year, having had her last birthday on October 5th. She is the second wife of her late departed husband who was a cousin of that well-known South Australian of 'the past, "Uncle Harry" Bottrill, of the Sunshine Society, which he founded 'way back in the 90's of last century; and the London (Branch of which, in the first decade of this century, feted the popular founder, who was so widely known and respected in Adelaide and its environs as well as far beyond. "Uncle Harry" was a fine
elocutionist as those of his generation will recall. Mrs. H. E. Bottrill, whom the writer interviewed, continuing her
remarks, said her late husband was also a gandson of the early pioneer family of the Bottrills of Kangarilla.
Her husband came to Woodside over 30 years ago. and bought the land they occupied from Mr. H. Spoehr,
now of Balhannah. There was a lot of work on the farm then, she said, and no such favorable assistants as
clover and super, and continued— "We have been milking about 30 cow of the 50 head or more that we have.
I shall greatly miss the cows and also the fowls in my new home, but will take some of the poultry with me. It
is now the modern times we are living in, but, with all the improvements the old tones were the. best. We
have found everyone nice; but the young people of the present are more discontented. There .were in the old
days amusements, of course—dances and the like; hut no picture shows. A son of my late husband, is a Methodist minister, the Rev. Gordon. Bottrill, who has been stationed at various towns ih South Australia. His last
circuit was Port Wakefield. Unfortunately he is now on the sick list. He is in his 47 th year and has been in the Church as a preacher for over 20 years." In concluding her remarks Mrs. Bottrill said that, prior to her marriage, she was Miss Emily Baldock, of Mount Torrens,-- and intends, now that her property has changed hands, to " reside with her daughter, Carrie Bottrill, of. Woodside.
