McClintock is wearing the full-dress uniform of a naval captain (1856 pattern) with less than three years service, and the Arctic Medal (1818-55). Either this portrait, or NPG 919, was engraved by H. Davis, published Graves, 1860 (example in British Museum). The date was provided by the artist in a memorandum of c.1899 (NPG archives). Physical description Healthy complexion, dark bluish(?) eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers. Dressed in a white shirt, and dark blue naval uniform, with gold-braided collar and epaulettes, gilt buttons, and a silver medal with grey ribbon. Background colour dark brown. Provenance Commissioned or purchased by Colonel John Barrow, and bequeathed by him, 1899. Exhibitions RA, 1857 (40); possibly the portrait (or NPG 1211) in the Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea, 1891 (50).
