About Emily Morey

Obituary September 3, 1906; source Warren County IL Genealogical Society Mrs. G. W. Morey died at her home near Phelps Saturday night at 11:40 of cancer, from which disease she had long been afflicted. She had been confined to her home for the past eight months. Mrs. Emily Bonnell was born in Erie County PA, April 20, 1823(?), and in April 18– moved to Illinois. On Sept.20,1851, she was united in marriage with George W. Morey. After several years residence in Floyd township, they moved to the farm in Lenox township, Mrs. Morey lived for over forty two years. The husband died July 11, 1900. Three children are left to morn the loss of a kind and loving mother, whose every thought was for their welfare. They are Mrs. T.W. Russell of Crete, Neb; W.F. Morey, who resides on a portion of the home farm, and H. Morey who has always lived at home. Besides these two children died in infancy. Mrs. Morey was the last of a family of eight. She was a long member of the Methodist church and died in the faith, and was ready to obey when the summons came. The funeral services were held from the late home today, and were conducted by Elder V.H.Ingram of Berwick. (description of funeral) Interment was made in Monmouth cemetery.

Emily’s grave stone has her maiden name “Bonnell” and year of birth 1823. She is the daughter of William S and Mary Elizabeth Bonnell and was born in Erie PA, her place of birth is noted in her obituary and PA is in several censuses.

Married George Morey September 21, 1851, Warren County, Illinois - Source FindAGrave and the Warren County Historical society, Film # 001377920. Sherre Chapin hired a researcher to review the original marriage document to look for Parents names, but parents were not identified. Children: Mary V Morey William Morey Charles H Morey

1860 census shows Nancy and sister Emily live next door to each other in Floyd Township or Warren County Illinois. George and Nancy Johnson live in Dwelling #2594 while George and Emily Morey live in dwelling 2605. See the attached Plattmap for Warren County. Also notice the Wisconsin connection, a child named James Bunnell, 2 yrs old born “Wis” is listed in the household with Emily’s family. Could this be Emily and Nancy’s nephew? If so why is he living here, hundreds of miles away from his parents in Wisconsin. OR is this James"Russell" . Viola who is only 7 or 8 in 1860 census goes on to marry Thomas Russell, so perhaps there is a Wisconsin connection with the Russell family. (Research has not found a James Bunnell’s born 1858 with any of the brothers in Wisconsin (censuses)

1880 Census Emily's parents are listed as born in PENN. we know William S. Bonnell was born in PA. But Mary Elizabeth was born in Ireland and came to US as a child. Could this be info Emily didn't know?

In 1853 she gives birth to daughter Viola in Cameron Illinois and has 2 more children with the surname Morey. The date of her first born is after her brother John moves to Wisconsin, but before her parents and William, Wilson and James move to Wi.

The resources below from Rebecca Spang show she was married after children were born. It’s possible the record date of marriage is translated incorrectly. Emily was married in 1851. Her sister Nancy had also moved to Illinois. ( marriage date in the obituary text above, and attached.)

Dec 28th, 2020 Warren County Historical Society pulled the original Marriage and death record for Emily Bonnell Morey and neither document identified her parents.
